A Patented Industrial-Scale Extraction Platform That’s Disrupting the Cannabis Industry Radient Technologies, Inc.

As the demand for natural health products and natural medicines has increased in recent decades, so too has the need for a method of ingredient extraction that can isolate and safely extract active natural compounds at industrial-scale volumes. With its patented, proprietary MAP™ technology platform, Canadian company Radient Technologies serves this growing market, extracting valuable natural compounds from a range of biological materials at commercial scale, in many cases providing superior customer outcomes in terms of ingredient purity, yield, extraction time, and cost. MAP™ requires less processing time (minutes rather than hours), less heat, and less solvent than other conventional methods of extraction, resulting in high quality extracts.

Founded by Dr. Steven Splinter in 2001, Edmonton-based Radient Technologies is using its disruptive MAP™ extraction technology to provide solutions for the burgeoning natural healthcare industry, serving market leaders in industries that include pharmaceutical, nutraceuticals, food & beverage, natural health, and personal care.

Recently, Radient has expanded its offerings to enter into the cannabinoids market, utilizing its MAP™ platform to process and extract cannabinoids including cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol from cannabis biomass. To date, the company has signed Master Service Agreements (MSAs) with a number of Canadian Licensed Producers, including Aurora Cannabis Inc., considered one of Canada’s “Big Five” cannabis producers, which has recently made inroads into the European market.

The company also recently announced that it had filed a provisional patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for innovation related to methods for obtaining nicotine-depleted tobacco, after having completed a four-year study in partnership with a leading tobacco manufacturer, which proved its continuous-flow MAP™ technology could remove more than 95% of nicotine from tobacco biomass.

Interview Snippet with CEO, Denis Taschuk:

Q. In this modern business world, what do you exactly mean by “A Smart Company”?

A smart company is one that can anticipate and act on opportunities and challenges with equal determination through innovation, while also staying true to its core values.

We didn’t enter the market of natural ingredient extraction in 2001 with the expectation that one day we would be capable of providing extraction solutions to the cannabis industry, or to the tobacco industry. Because as a company we were forward-thinking, made sure we were well-informed, and remained adaptable to these looming opportunities, Radient has been able to establish a strong foothold in these markets.

Q. How do you stay relevant to consumer interests and needs in this highly volatile market?

We have been patiently building business opportunities in the cannabis industry while also awaiting the green light from the policymakers and government authorities that govern such matters. In the meantime, we have also been generating new business in the food & beverage, pharmaceutical, nutraceuticals and personal care industries.

The difference between the consumer market today versus a decade ago is that today, large mainstream corporations which previously did not have an inclination to make products using all-natural ingredients are seeing an increased demand from consumers to make their products healthier. This is true even of cigarettes, what with the FDA’s recently announced proposed plan to reduce nicotine levels in tobacco products.

Q. Smartness & Technology are a perfect fusion. How often do you innovate? Is it only when there is a need in the market?

As a technology company, we are constantly innovating as new growth opportunities and better ways to service our growing list of clients emerge. However, at Radient we are not concerned with fads or ideas that don’t have staying power, or that would potentially distract us from the more relevant and pressing strategic goals the company has set forth. So, we choose to remain flexible and open to innovation.

Q. What makes your company one of the SMARTEST and why?

Through our MAP™ platform, we provide superior extraction solutions for high-value natural ingredients. When a client wants to extract a certain ingredient or compound from an expensive or rare biomass at a commercial scale volume - Radient is capable of processing up to 200kg per hour of biomass, or approximately 5 metric tons per day at our current facility in Edmonton - more of the desired compound can be extracted from the biomass than would be possible with other leading conventional extraction methods. MAP™ uses less energy than other conventional extraction technologies, saving our clients time and money. Moreover, our technology can easily be scaled up or down to suit the application.

Also, because our extraction method safely and volumetrically heats the biomass in an efficient continuous-flow process and because only water and ethanol are used as solvents, the extracted product can be classified as “clean label”. I believe that definitely makes us one of the more unique companies in the industry. It’s for these reasons that Radient was recently nominated for a Katerva Award for Sustainable Innovation.

Q. As a question on sustainability, where do you see your company a couple of years from now?

As Radient continues to expand on a global scale, and as the market for natural health products and medicines also continues to expand, we are focused on establishing the company and our technology as the safest, most efficient, and most sustainable commercial-scale ingredient extraction solution provider in the world.
