Full Harvest – Revolutionizing the Produce Industry by Connecting Farms to Food Businesses and Combating Food Waste with Innovative B2B Marketplace Solutions

Full Harvest is a B2B platform connecting large farms to food businesses to sell significantly discounted, yet perfectly good surplus and imperfectly shaped produce that would have otherwise gone to waste. Approx. 20 billion pounds of produce go to waste in the U.S. annually simply because they are not perfectly shaped for strict retailer standards. Full Harvest aims to solve this problem by creating a marketplace for this unutilized edible and delicious produce. Full Harvest helps growers get the most out of a harvest and food companies save money by bringing farm excess to market.

One-fourth of all edible produce is wasted on farms in the U.S. because of a disaggregated supply chain that has historically been offline. For a perishable product like produce, this means that some produce, especially surplus and imperfect, cannot find ways to market in a timely enough manners. Full Harvest is working to solve this problem with the first online business-to-business (B2B) marketplace for all produce, including surplus and imperfect, connecting farmers to commercial produce buyers.

The Full Harvest Verified Rescued Produce® Seal

The Full Harvest Verified Rescued Produce® seal provides a simple and clear way to communicate that the produce used in making innovative, sustainable products would have otherwise gone to waste. As part of Full Harvest’s third-party verification system, the Full Harvest seal allows food and beverage brands to showcase how their purchasing of rescued produce is helping to create new revenue opportunities for farmers, reduce food waste, water use, and CO2 emissions.

Often the perfectly delicious produce that farmers grow never makes it off of the farm.  There are two primary reasons why on-farm produce is wasted:

  • The produce they grow is “ugly” or imperfect - it does not meet strict retail aesthetic standards simply because it is not perfect looking. Only the produce or parts of the produce that meet strict specifications are harvested and the remainder is sometimes sold as off-grade, but is largely left in the fields to rot or sent to landfills.
  • There is surplus as a result of overproduction, lack of selling opportunities or loss of demand.

But not all surplus and imperfect produce is actually Verified Rescued™.  To fully know whether or not produce is rescued, it requires an audit and verification process.  That’s where Full Harvest can help.  Full Harvest Verified Rescued Produce® is defined as produce or harvest byproduct that:

  • Was grown for human consumption but is determined that it will go to waste at the time of evaluation.
  • Has been verified through the Full Harvest Verified Rescued Produce® audit and evaluation process.

How it Works:

  • Full Harvest works with suppliers to identify edible surplus and imperfect produce that would otherwise go to waste.
  • Full Harvest verifies that the harvest would otherwise go to waste and helps suppliers sell their produce to food manufacturers looking for high quality produce.
  • Consumers purchase and enjoy CPG products made with Verified Rescued Produce® with the confidence that the products are helping suppliers and directly reducing food waste.

Fighting Climate Change with Imperfect Produce

While cars and cows are often recognized as large contributors to climate change, it is actually food waste that is the single largest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions, according to Project Drawdown. Growing food requires water, energy and inputs like fertilizer that all have an environmental footprint.  When food is grown, but never harvested or consumed, all of the water and resources associated with this growing are wasted. The good news is that Full Harvest can all help solve this by purchasing products made with Full Harvest Verified Rescued Produce®.

Full Harvest is solving the $2.6 trillion food waste problem through technology and innovation. They are the only business-to-business online marketplace connecting farmers with commercial produce buyers to purchase produce of all grades, including an expertise on surplus and off-grade produce. Their mission is to create a world with 100% ‘full harvests’ in order to reduce climate change and deliver incremental revenue to farmers. Additionally, through their Innovation Services, they partner with brands on their efforts to create new sustainable CPG products to meet consumer demand for sustainable products. A win-win-win for food companies, farmers, and the planet.
