Lightyear One: The first solar powered electric car is here
The Silicon Review
26 June, 2019

Lightyear One is a brand new car unveiled by the ambitious young startup Lightyear and is capable of traveling 450 miles on a single charge. What’s remarkable about this one-of-a-kind car is that it does not rely on the electricity grid, but gets its power from the sun. This futuristic looking vehicle has solar cells embedded into its roof and hood, allowing it to charge its battery while on the move. Additionally, the Lightyear One can also be charged from conventional charging stations, with one night of charging enabling a mileage of 250 miles.

The car is not yet ready to be mass produced, but the company is confident of being production ready by 2021. Lightyear has production slots to manufacture 500 vehicles and booking each slot is expected to cost about €120,000. Lightyear One could give some of the largest electric car makers a serious run for their money.

Cars are one of the major factors that contribute to global warming. Each day sees hundreds of millions of commuters around the globe travel by private vehicles, releasing millions of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The solution to this looming problem is electric cars. Electric cars don’t pollute, but a few of them are affordable to the average middle class working professional. That is the main reason why some of the largest automakers around the globe have been pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into the production of electric vehicles.
