NASA Shares Spooky Pictures Ju...NASA has already gotten into the Halloween holiday spirit this year. They posted two spooky images to Twitter:
Onewas of the sun, showing the star to be a ghostly looking Halloween pumpkin with the illusion of a ‘jack-o-lantern’ type face. They uploaded the image to Twitter with the caption, “Even our stars celebrate the spooky season – in 2014, active regions on the Sun created this jack-o’-lantern face, as seen in ultraviolet light by our Solar Dynamics observatory satellite.” The Solar Dynamics Observatory Satellite watches the sun at all times from its orbit in space.
"This image blends together two sets of extreme ultraviolet wavelengths at 171 and 193 Ångströms, typically colorized in gold and yellow, to create a particularly Halloween-like appearance," NASA further added. The image has gone viral on social media gathering over 10.8 thousand likes on Twitter and over 3 thousand re-tweets and shares.
The other was of a celestial phenomenon appearing to be a galactic ghoul. The apparition was caused by two galaxies colliding and the image was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope in June."Each 'eye' is the bright core of a galaxy, one of which slammed into another," NASA explained on their website. "The outline of the face is a ring of young blue stars. Other clumps of new stars form a nose and mouth.”
The collision will give the galaxies a ring structure for about 100 million years which is a ‘rare cosmic circumstance’ according to NASA. In about 1 or 2 billion years, the galaxies will eventually fully merge into one another.
