Canada passes legislation to bring local content on streaming Platforms.

It was cleared by the House of Commons by 208 votes to 117

Canada's lower house of the parliament passed a legislation on Tuesday that would bring online streaming platforms under the stewardship of Canada's broadcast regulator and compel firms like Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify to offer more local content. The Bill was brought about by the Prime Minister of Canada's Liberal Government, Justin Trudeau. It was cleared by the House of Commons by 208 votes to 117, with the support of opposition New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois. The legislation, according to the Government, would ensure that the online streaming services are promoting Canadian music, supporting local jobs, and airing local stories.

Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez, who introduced the Bill in February, clarified that the proposed changes are directed toward commercial programs streamed online and would not apply to individual Canadians. Critics are concerned about the potential impact the Bill would have on independent content creators and also say that it was rushed to a vote. Once the Senate or the upper chamber adopts it and gives royal assent, Bill C-11 will become a law. The goal of the Bill, more broadly, is to promote and amplify Canadian content and culture. The Bill will help in the modernization of broadcast regulations.
