The US proposes standards for EV charging stations

The US proposes standards for EV charging stations
The Silicon Review
10 June, 2022

These changes would help in bringing about convenient charging solutions

The U.S. Transportation Department proposed minimum standards and requirements for charging electric vehicles. The rules require government-funded EV charging stations to use DC Fast chargers and have at least four ports, capable of simultaneously charging four EVs, and each must be at or above 150 kW. Charging stations can no longer require membership to use their services. These changes would help in bringing about convenient charging solutions. The move comes in the light of the Biden administration encouraging more consumers, to opt for EV vehicles. By 2030, the Biden administration wants 50% of all new vehicles manufactured and sold to be electric or plug-in hybrid electric models.

This is to ensure that the government-funded EV charging network is user-friendly, reliable, and accessible to all Americans. The proposed rule would ensure that EV owners could use charging stations nationwide and have similar payment experience, pricing information, and speed. EV stations operating across the country can now communicate and operate on the same software platforms. The charging ports will need to be operated by the States for at least five years. Certification standards are set for workers, operation, installment, and maintenance of EV chargers. The Biden Administration aims to build a network of 50,000 electric vehicle charging stations by 2030.
