U.S. monkeypox outbreak is slo...A White House health official, Demetre Daskalakis, said the monkeypox outbreak had slowed significantly since July as vaccination has become more accessible.
The deputy head of the White House monkeypox response team, Demetre Daskalakis, said it took 25 days for cases to double in August, down from eight days in July. New York, Texas, Illinois, and California have all seen significant declines in new cases over the past month. The U.S. monkeypox outbreak is delayed as vaccines have become more available and more general public awareness about what steps individuals can take to lower their risk of infection.
The U.S. is still battling the largest monkeypox outbreak in the world, with nearly 21,000 cases reported across all 50 states, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Biden administration faced criticism over the summer for not moving quick enough to ramp up vaccine supply to meet the tremendous demand for the shots. Last month, Xavier Becerra, Health Secretary of the USA, declared a public health emergency. The Food and Drug Administration also licensed a different method to administer the vaccines, allowing providers to extract more doses from each vaccine vial.
