Ukrainian President is named the 2022 Person of the Year of Time Magazine

Time Magazine has named Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president and "the spirit of Ukraine" as its 2022 Person of the Year.

The award goes to a person or an event deemed to have the most influence over the past 12 months on global events. Other finalists in the magazine included Chinese leader Xi Jinping, protesters in Iran, and the US Supreme Court. The editor of Time Magazine said that the decision was “the most clear-cut in memory.”

The magazine said that the president had inspired Ukrainians and he was recognized internationally for the courage he has shown in resisting the Russian invasion. The magazine also said that the success of Volodymyr Zelensky as a wartime leader has relied that courage is contagious.

American baseballer Aaron Judge has been recognized as Time’s Athlete of the Year, Blackpink, the K-pop band was recognized as the Entertainer of the year, Women in Iran are Heroes of the year, and Michelle Yeoh, the Malaysian actress is named the Icon of the Year. The tradition of recognizing Person of the Year began in 1927 but back then it was known as the Man of the Year.
