A US winter storm traps people in cars in New York State

As massive winter storm continues to hit North America at least 28 people have perished in western New York State, the majority of them in Buffalo.

A state official claimed that during what was “possibly” the worst storm of their lifetime, several people had been stranded in their vehicles for more than two days. Through Tuesday, up to nine additional; inches (23 cm) of snow are predicted in some areas of the state, according to meteorologists. An estimated 250,000 homes and businesses lost power over the weekend, though it was gradually restored.

56 people were killed in the storm that spanned from Canada to the Mexican border. An emergency declaration permitting federal assistance for New York State was approved by US President Joe Biden. He tweet read, “My heart is with those who lost loved ones this holiday weekend.”

Additionally Vermont, Ohio, Wisconsin, Missouri, Kansas and Colorado all recorded storm related fatalities. Iguanas froze and fell from trees in South Florida as a result of the extremely low temperatures. With temperature falling to -50F, the western US of Montana was the hardest hit. Canada’s eastern province of Quebec and the central state of Ontario took the worst of the storm.
