The FDA is actively working on developing a validated analytical method to monitor the market

The FDA made an announcement regarding the discontinuation of grease-proofing substances containing per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food contact applications within the U.S. market. This action effectively ends the voluntary phase-out of these substances by manufacturers, which were commonly used on food packaging paper and paperboard, thereby eliminating the primary source of PFAS dietary exposure from authorized food contact uses. The announcement signifies the completion of these voluntary commitments. Furthermore, the FDA has confirmed that other manufacturers have voluntarily ceased sales of additional food contact substances (containing different types of PFAS) intended for use as grease-proofing agents in the U.S.

Grease-proofing substances are typically applied to paper and paperboard packaging to prevent grease and oil leakage and provide water-resistant properties. PFAS-containing substances were commonly used on items such as fast-food wrappers, microwave popcorn bags, take-out paperboard containers, pet food bags, and similar packaging materials. Although the original commitment letters received by the FDA from manufacturers indicated that products containing these substances could remain on the market for up to 18 months following the last sale, most companies have exited the market ahead of their designated phase-out dates. As part of their dedication to food chemical safety and ongoing reevaluation of chemicals authorized for use in food, the FDA reaffirmed their commitment to conducting post-market safety evaluations to ensure that risk determinations remain accurate and grounded in current scientific knowledge.
