Danone North America FDA's decision

Eating yogurt regularly, at least 2 cups per week may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes

In response to a petition submitted by Danone North America, a leader in the food and beverage industry, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the approval of the first-ever qualified health claim for yogurt. This claim acknowledges a potential link between regular yogurt consumption and a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, providing consumers with another compelling reason to include yogurt in their diets. The FDA's announcement comes after nearly five years of review, during which the agency examined existing research on yogurt and type 2 diabetes.

This comprehensive review included data from over 300,000 individuals, leading to the conclusion that incorporating yogurt into the typical American diet could benefit public health. Miguel Freitas, Ph.D., Vice President of Health and Scientific Affairs at Danone North America, emphasized the importance of empowering consumers with actionable information to help lower their risk of type 2 diabetes through dietary modifications. He noted that a growing body of research supports the idea that regular yogurt consumption could reduce the risk of this prevalent health ailment. Beyond its potential role in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, yogurt is also recognized as part of a healthy dietary pattern, providing essential nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, and protein that support bone and muscle health.
