Several semiconductor initiatives were announced, along with efforts to explore joint workforce development in this sector

In a significant development, the United States and Japan have revealed a series of ambitious initiatives in AI, quantum computing, semiconductors, and other critical technologies. The announcements came following Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio's official visit to the White House, where President Biden joined in unveiling the plans. While underscoring their commitment across various fronts like defense, climate action, and humanitarian endeavors, the focus of the new collaborations lies in technology, highlighting the evolving nature of the US-Japan alliance into a comprehensive global partnership rooted in innovation. Both nations also pledged support for each other in establishing national AI safety institutes and vowed to collaborate on interoperable AI safety standards and risk management frameworks.

In the realm of quantum technology, partnerships between the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) were highlighted, along with trilateral cooperation involving the University of Chicago, University of Tokyo, and Seoul National University to enhance quantum workforce training. The alliance further embraced collaborations in cloud computing, telecommunications, robotics, biotechnology, and other domains, showcasing a fusion of public and private efforts. Recognizing the importance of building complementary ecosystems across vital technologies, both nations aim to bolster competitiveness, economic prosperity, and national security amid heightened strategic competition.
