Indian CEOs Struggle with Workforce and Governance Challenges amid Rapid AI Adoption

Indian CEOs Struggle Workforce Governance Challenges
The Silicon Review

The survey suggests that unclear expectations within organizations might be a contributing factor

A new survey by the IBM Institute for Business Value reveals that Indian CEOs are facing significant challenges in workforce management, cultural transformation, and governance as they push for rapid implementation and scaling of generative AI (GenAI) within their organizations. The annual global study, which included 3,000 CEOs from over 30 countries and 26 industries, highlights a push from 58% of Indian CEOs to adopt GenAI faster than some employees are comfortable with.

Key findings indicate that Indian CEOs place a strong emphasis on AI governance, with 70% linking organizational success to effective collaboration between finance and technology departments. However, nearly half of the respondents admitted that competition among C-suite executives can hinder such collaboration. Furthermore, almost half emphasized the importance of cultural change over technical challenges in becoming a data-driven organization. Trust in AI is seen as unattainable without effective governance, as stated by 71% of the Indian CEOs surveyed. Despite this, only 42% believe they have robust GenAI governance policies in place. The survey suggests that unclear expectations within organizations might be a contributing factor. While 75% of respondents noted that inspiring a common vision yields better outcomes than strict standards, 31% acknowledged that employees often do not understand the impact of strategic decisions on their roles.

The study also highlights the growing need for retraining and reskilling, with 34% of Indian CEOs projecting such requirements over the next three years, a significant increase from 6% globally in 2021. Additionally, 49% are hiring for new GenAI roles. Despite the emphasis on innovation, nearly half of the CEOs cited regulatory constraints as a major barrier. As Indian CEOs navigate these challenges, only 32% are funding GenAI investments through new IT spending, with the majority reallocating existing technology budgets. The findings underscore the complex landscape Indian CEOs must manage to successfully integrate AI technologies into their businesses.
