Greece’s Renewable Energy Bo...Amazon invests $1 billion in Greece's renewable energy, building three wind farms to power 200,000 homes sustainably.
Amazon is investing heavily in Greece's renewable energy industry by building three new utility-scale wind farms, its biggest renewable energy transaction in the country to date. The wind farms were announced at AWS Day in Athens and will help Amazon power its operations with carbon-free energy while aiding Greece's shift to clean electricity sources.
The farms consist of the Vermio wind farm, which is split into Vermio North and Vermio South, covering the Western and Central Macedonia areas. The Mesokorfi and Koukouras wind farms will also be constructed in the Peloponnese area. Combined, the farms will produce enough clean energy to supply close to 200,000 Greek homes every year. Power production will start in 2026.
This project is part of Greece's National Energy and Climate Plan, which aims to produce more than 80% of the nation's electricity from renewable sources by the year 2030. Greece presently depends on fossil fuels for 48% of its energy, making such wind farms an important stride towards reducing carbon emissions and energy dependence.
Aside from sustainability, the projects are also anticipated to generate substantial economic returns. The construction and operation of the Vermio wind farm alone will generate more than 100 jobs in the initial phase, up to 300 positions during peak construction. The partnership between Aer Soléir, the National Bank of Greece, and Amazon is a $1 billion investment in Greece's energy industry.
Amazon's renewable energy commitment has international reach with more than 500 solar and wind projects internationally. It just reached its 100% renewable energy target seven years ahead of schedule, underlining its role as the world leader in global energy transformation.
