Citing unnamed sources, the report suggests bipartisan legislation is under discussion to draft new federal rules for self-driving technology. These changes could address existing barriers, such as the current cap of 2,500 autonomous vehicles that manufacturers can deploy annually. Previous attempts to raise this cap to 100,000 vehicles during Trump’s first term and the Biden administration failed to pass.

Reuters has identified Emil Michael, a former Uber executive, as a leading candidate for the position. Relaxed regulations could benefit companies like Tesla, whose CEO Elon Musk has actively engaged with Trump’s team. Musk recently unveiled the Cybercab, a two-seater electric vehicle designed without a steering wheel or pedals, priced under $30,000 and expected to launch in 2026.
