Blue Origin Delays New Glenn Launch Due to Weather

Blue Origin Delays New Glenn Launch Due to Weather
The Silicon Review
10 January, 2025

Blue Origin has delayed the launch of its New Glenn rocket to Sunday, January 12, due to rough seas in the Atlantic.

Bad weather forces delay in Blue Origin's New Glenn launch. Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos's private space company, Blue Origin, has postponed until Sunday the launch of its new giant rocket, the New Glenn, because of adverse weather conditions. The original date planned for a Friday, January 10 launch was put off due to rough seas in the Atlantic Ocean, where the booster is scheduled to land. The new launch window is at 1:00 a.m. Sunday, January 12. EST (0600 GMT) from Blue Origin's launch pad at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The company made the announcement on January 9, explaining that a high sea state in the Atlantic was preventing them from proceeding with the launch. "Our three-hour window remains the same, opening Sunday at 1 a.m. EST," Blue Origin said in a statement on the social media platform X.

Blue Origin's New Glenn is the company's very first orbital-class launch vehicle. At 98 meters, it stands tall at 320 feet, with a reusable first stage. This first stage is to return to Earth after launch and land on a barge named Jacklyn in the Atlantic Ocean. The company hopes that it can land the booster on the first attempt.

New Glenn is considered a significant part of Blue Origin's long-term plans. The rocket is expected to become a workhorse for the company, with missions lined up for NASA, including a Mars mission, and for launching Amazon's Kuiper internet satellites. The reusable booster is a key component in Blue Origin's strategy to reduce the cost of space missions.

The FAA's Notice to Airmen update suggests that if the launch is further delayed to January 12, Blue Origin will have another chance to attempt the launch before January 16.
