Zoram Medical College to Offer Affordable Transplants in Mizoram

Mizoram government plans to introduce affordable kidney and heart transplants at Zoram Medical College and Hospital.

The government’s initiative to improve healthcare in Mizoram includes the introduction of tissue transplantation services at the state-run Zoram Medical College and Hospital. Health Minister Lalrinpuii revealed this upcoming plan during a party meeting in Lunglei town on Thursday.

The new scheme, to be supported by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation, will provide kidney and heart transplants at a fraction of the cost charged by private hospitals. Minister Lalrinpuii said the state is finalizing all essential arrangements for the program, including the appointment of a transplant coordinator, a consultant, and additional staff to ensure the smooth running of the service.

This is expected to revolutionize health care access for Mizoram in terms of having affordable transplant options for patients requiring them. Even though private hospitals charge exorbitant rates, the government aims to provide the kidney and heart transplants for just Rs 1 lakh-a significant reduction of the financial burden on patients.

The introduction of tissue transplantation services is part of the Mizoram government's plan to improve state healthcare infrastructure. This will further make life-saving medical treatments reachable to the common people of Mizoram, whose otherwise specialized healthcare would have sent them to neighboring states.

According to Minister Lalrinpuii, the project will usher in a new chapter in healthcare delivery in the region and will, therefore, make a significant contribution to the general quality of life of the residents.
