Tesla's Entry into India is Unlikely to Disrupt Local Automakers soon

Tesla’s market entry won’t threaten local automakers as EV penetration grows in India.

According to the trading firm CLSA (Commercial License and Support Agreement), the premiumization of the automobile market may be accelerated by Tesla's possible arrival into India. The brokerage firm claims that although Tesla is expected to join the Indian market, it is not expected to provide a serious threat to the nation's established companies, such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra, anytime soon.

With 15% of the worldwide EV market and significant sales in China (40%) and the US (35%), Tesla may not have much of an influence in India. Compared to China (30%) and the US (9.5%), India's EV penetration rate is currently much lower at just 2.4%.

Due to new releases, price convergence between EVs and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, and higher pollution standards (CAFE III and IV), CLSA projects that EV adoption in India would rise to 15% by FY28 and 25% by FY30.

Direct imports are not feasible due to the heavy import taxes, which are 110% for cars over $40,000 and 60% for those under that amount. In comparison, the Indian BEV market is still in its early stages, with only around 2.4% EV penetration at present. The brokerage also noted that, even if Tesla captures a market share of about 10-20% in EVs by FY30, this would result in an overall passenger vehicle share of roughly 2-5%.

The on-road cost of the Tesla Model 3 in India would be between Rs 35 and Rs 40 lakh, even if import taxes were reduced to 15 to 20%. According to CLSA, this pricing would be 20–50% more expensive than vehicles such as the Hyundai e-Creta, Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara, and Mahindra XUV 9e, which would make it less appealing to mass-market consumers.
