Liberal MPs moved to consolidate control over all House of Commons committees, prompting furious accusations from Conservatives that the government is shredding Westminster parliamentary politics. The Silicon Review reports on the power struggle unfolding in Ottawa.

The minority Liberal government moved to assert control over the majority of House of Commons committees, triggering a heated confrontation with Conservatives who accused Prime Minister Mark Carney of "shredding" fundamental Westminister parliamentary convention.

The Liberal-dominated House Affairs Committee, which includes members from the NDP and Bloc Québécois who supported the motion, voted to change the longstanding formula for committee chair and vice-chair distribution. Traditionally, the government holds the chair in some committees while the opposition holds the chair in others, with vice-chairs distributed proportionally.

Under the change, the Liberals will hold the chair in all but one or two committees. The Conservatives, Bloc Québécois and NDP will be left to fight over the remaining limited chairs among themselves in what critics describe as a "divide and conquer" strategy.

The government side argued the motion was necessary to break a procedural logjam that had stalled committee operations for months. Liberal House Leader Steven MacKinnon defended the move, stating that "the opposition must face the consequences of its own obstruction."

The Conservatives have vowed to challenge the move, accusing the Liberals of using their partnership with the NDP and Bloc to consolidate power rather than govern collaboratively. "The Liberal-NDP-Bloc coalition," Scheer added, is "vastly different from what Canadians voted for."

"Canadians never voted for a government that would weaponize procedure to avoid oversight, one that would use its majority to reward its friends and punish its critics," commented Conservative MP Michael Barrett.

Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner accused the government of centralizing an "unprecedented, undemocratic amount of power," adding that "Carney has embarked on a radical path."

As parliamentary politics in Canada head into uncharted territory, the coming days will determine whether the government can push through its legislative agenda or whether this power struggle leads to a complete legislative stall and potentially an election.

As parliamentary politics in Canada descend into a bitter power struggle over committee control, The Silicon Review examines how the Liberal minority government's procedural move could reshape oversight for the remainder of this Parliament and whether the Conservatives have any recourse beyond public outrage.
