After giving up a three-shot lead overnight to win the women's solo title at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 on Saturday, Pranavi Urs maintained her composure and became the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games gold medal in golf. The 23-year-old Indian golfer concluded the four-round tournament at 15-under 265, one stroke ahead of Yin Ruoning of the People's Republic of China and Shannon Xuan Yin Tan of Singapore, who shared second place at 14-under 266.
At the Kasugai Country Club East Course, Pranavi started the final round three shots ahead, but a triple bogey on the par-four third eliminated that lead. After bouncing back with a birdie on the sixth hole, she maintained her composure until the last stretch and signed for an even-par 70 to win the historic match.
Yin Rouning, a six-time LPGA winner won silver medal after beating Shannon Xuan Yin Tan in the Shoot-off. In the last round, Yin Ruoning put up a fierce fight with a three-under 67, but Shannon Xuan Yin Tan replied with a two-under 68. On the 18th hole, all three competitors made par.
The victory put an end to India's 24-year wait for an Asian Games golf gold medal the nation had only won the men's individual gold in Busan in 2002 thanks to Shiv Kapur. Before this, India's only medal in the women's individual golf competition in the Games was Aditi Ashok's silver from Hangzhou 2023.
After winning the gold medal for India she said “That’s always the goal – to always be the first one to do anything. The first will always be the first, and I’ve always had that motto growing up and I’m just glad I could do it. So yeah, like I said, IGPL was good, but this gold beats it.”
After winning her individual golf gold medal, Pranavi then helped women’s golf team to clinch their first ever medal in history of Asian Games. Together with Olympians Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar, Pranavi added a second medal to the women's team silver, that is India’s first-ever Asian Games medal in the team event of golf.
It is India’s fourth gold in golf at Asian Games. The first time India won the individual golf gold medal at Asian Games was at New Delhi 1982, thanks to Lakshman Singh.
So far India is calmly staying in the top 5 with 19 gold medals out of 81 medals. And China leading the medal tally with 165 gold medals out of 325 medals, and host Japan at no. 2 in the medal tally with 75 gold medals out 248 medals.
