“With a mix of AI and AR, SpectraPixel™ technology will impact the spread of diabetes and support food-watchers in reaching their goals.”

Chronic diseases, especially diabetes mellitus, are a huge public health burden costing us billions of dollars each year, but the advancement of mobile health (mHealth) technology can reduce our visits to the emergency room or neighborhood clinic, and put money back in our pockets. mHealth apps have offered a new approach to diabetes management, and are gradually gaining popularity. The features of such apps include: tracking blood glucose levels, tracking insulin usage and calculating dosage, monitoring diet, and physical activities, measuring and keeping track of body weight, as well as providing educational information.

FoodPhone is one such provider of an online health monitoring platform, which was developed to lessen the daily friction of diabetes maintenance. Beyond Diabetes, FoodPhone can be used to manage weight, fitness, some food allergies, and medical food restrictions. The company provides a mobile health diet and health monitoring platform through 3D imaging. It enables the users to monitor nutritional intake by 3D image processing captured with their smartphone or mobile device.

Christopher M. Mutti, CEO of FoodPhone spoke exclusively to The Silicon Review on how his company is turning regular mobile phones into precise food and nutrition analysis devices.

Interview Highlights

Q. Tell us what inspired the creation of FoodPhone. What pain points did you set out to solve?

Diabetes affects ~100M people in the US and ~432M worldwide. People with diabetes need an accurate assessment of the macronutrients of each meal they are about to eat, especially the distribution of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. They use this information to determine whether to inject an insulin bolus before eating to prevent potentially life-threatening hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia. FoodPhone was developed to meet this very clear need and want to lessen the daily friction of diabetes maintenance.

FoodPhone was set up by a company called SmartDiiet, to positively impact the lives of many – if not all. We are here 24/7/365 for those who need a helping hand with understanding their bodies, by extension their minds.

Q. What is the SpectraPixel™ technology all about? What are its key features?

SmartDiiet develops smartphone multispectral camera sensors powered by cloud-based apps using our patented SpectraPixel™ technology, which combines near-infrared (NIR) and visual red-green-blue (RGB) and 3D imaging with proprietary artificial intelligence/machine learning algorithms to identify objects and their components in complex images of mixed objects. Illumination is provided by an array of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). FoodPhone takes a non-contact image of a plate of food containing an entire meal and calculates the carbohydrate, fat, and protein composition along with portion size in grams/ounces. The dietary analysis is instantly returned, displayed, and logged to the user’s smartphone for real-time use by a person with diabetes. In addition, FoodPhone does not just take a picture — it performs chemical analysis, turning the smartphone into a handheld mini-lab. It is within this technology that we find ourselves even stronger than other alternatives on the market, being the only device that analyzes your food by “Exciting Food Molecules” to measure the actual macronutrients or chemical composition of a meal in real time.

Q. What are the applications of FoodPhone? Elaborate on how the product can make difference to a diabetic patient.

Through SpectraPixel™ technology, we bring a lab straight into your hands. Our smartphone-based affordable mobile 3D hyperspectral camera sensors and cloud-based apps expertly and scientifically analyze the meal’s content, specifically the chemical composition, quantity in ounces/grams, and quality, while also segmenting mixed meals. With the help of the multispectral cameras and NIR sensors the user instantly gets a scientific analysis of their meal. This one-shot analysis provides details on the carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and other nutritional contents along with the true portion size of the prepared meal.

Combining different imaging technologies with AI-based intelligence, FoodPhone precisely identifies the amount and composition of food. There is no need to input any information into the application, probe the food or guess its volume. The analysis is fast and delivers exact Nutrition Fact sheets with accuracies beyond 90 percent. With a mix of AI and AR, SpectraPixel™ technology will impact the spread of diabetes and support food watchers in reaching their goals.

Q. What new endeavors is FoodPhone currently undertaking?

With such power and magnitude of AI/Ml and cloud-based technologies, FoodPhone can be utilized for so much more than the analysis of what is on our plates. For example, we have strategic partners who are interested in collaborating on projects such as real-time point-of-harvest grading of tuna fish for sushi and also finding out other uses and identification of tuna species. Agriculture, pharmaceutical, food fraud detection, food safety, and food and vegetable ripeness (Brix) are a few other use-case solutions we are planning to offer.

Q. Is there anything else you want us to highlight that we might have missed?

Our company has struck gold. We are a rising star in the health monitoring sector. We won Best Mobile 3D Hyperspectral Sensor App, 2022 award. We always look for new ways to improve our health and analysis, and through our multispectral 3D camera sensor and cloud-based machine learning app, it should be a staple in all our diets.
