Dr. Che Jordan, Ebony House, Inc. President and CEO: “We use evidence-based interventions designed to foster greater self-awareness, self-respect, and self-worth, while also addressing each individual’s unique needs, including cultural identity, religion, and sexual orientation.”

Founded in 1973, Ebony House Inc. stands as a vital pillar in South Phoenix, offering compassionate support and transformative care for individuals struggling with substance use and mental health challenges. Originally established by Elbertzena Fontenot, a recovering alcoholic with a vision inspired by God, Ebony House was born from her firsthand understanding of the difficulties faced by those battling addiction in underserved communities. Starting with only $500 and a deep commitment to helping others, Fontenot laid

the foundation for an organization that has since changed countless lives. Though she passed away in December 2023, her enduring legacy continues to inspire the work of Ebony House.

Under the current leadership of Dr. Che Jordan, who became CEO in December 2022, Ebony House has thrived amidst challenging times for treatment centers in Arizona. Dr. Jordan’s unwavering dedication has not only maintained the organization’s operations but also elevated client satisfaction to over 90%. Ebony House offers a comprehensive range of services, including residential facilities for men and women, a Children’s Behavioral Health Clinic, an HIV Outreach Clinic, and a supportive housing program for clients transitioning back into the community. Services encompass individual, family, and group counseling, employment assistance, and housing support, providing clients with both stability and purpose as they rebuild their lives. Through its compassionate approach and extensive resources, Ebony House continues to be a beacon of hope for those seeking recovery and a new beginning.

In conversation with Dr. Che Jordan, President and CEO of Ebony House, Inc.

Q. Ebony House has a long-standing history since 1973. How has the organization’s mission evolved over the decades to address new challenges in behavioral health and substance abuse?

Our mission has evolved significantly over time to ensure we're providing up-to-date, evidence-based practices. One of the key initiatives we've triumphed in is establishing an Alumni Association for men and women who have completed our residential program. This creates a lasting network of support, which is invaluable for long-term recovery. Additionally, we offer comprehensive supportive services for individuals living with HIV/AIDS through our Ryan White Part A/MAI Outreach program, including both medical and non-medical case management. What really sets us apart is our holistic approach—focusing on the whole person. We aim to build self-esteem and self-efficacy in all of our clients through compassionate and supportive interventions. We've also secured grants for residential and children's services, ensuring that even those without insurance can access the treatment they need.

Since stepping into the role of President, I've worked to expand our impact. Our residential and supportive housing programs consistently operate at full capacity, which speaks to the trust and need within the community. I’m proud to say we've increased the number of alumni, some of whom have been sober for 15, 20, or even 30 years, to serve as mentors for current clients. We also prioritize employing individuals who have been through the program and have maintained long-term sobriety. I recognized early on that we needed to offer more than just and therapy. We've evolved into a multi-faceted support network that values human connection just as much as clinical outcomes. This philosophy has been instrumental in shaping the comprehensive care we provide today.

Q. With substance abuse and mental health often intertwined, how does Ebony House integrate behavioral health services with substance treatment programs for holistic care?

The ultimate goal of our program is to support clients in achieving total abstinence and embracing a healthier lifestyle. We use evidence-based interventions designed to foster greater self-awareness, self-respect, and self-worth, while also addressing each individual's unique needs, including cultural identity, religion, and sexual orientation. Our approach includes providing referrals for educational and vocational opportunities as part of a personalized treatment plan, helping clients reintegrate into the community, retain the skills needed to stay free from substances, and build stronger relationships with their family and others.

A key component of our program is incorporating the 12 steps, which encourage clients to seek spiritual guidance. This process helps clients recognize that something greater than themselves can play a role in their journey to sobriety. Many clients continue seeking spiritual growth even after completing the program. Additionally, we encourage morning exercises and meditation to help clients center themselves and start each day with focus before beginning their treatment sessions.

Q. You’ve emphasized outcome-driven services. Can you share some measurable impacts or success stories that illustrate Ebony House’s effectiveness in community health?

Being featured on shows like The Montel Williams Show: The Balancing Act and Sonoran Living on ABC15 has been an incredible opportunity to share our clients' inspiring journeys. Their testimonials and stories serve as a beacon of hope for the community. We've seen a significant increase in our alumni, with more clients successfully graduating from the program. What's truly heartwarming is that many of them continue to stay connected by attending our AA meetings even after completing the program. They share their stories with others in the community, showing firsthand that recovery and a clean, sober life are absolutely achievable.

Q. What does the future hold for your company and its customers? Are exciting things on the way?

Absolutely. We're planning to expand our telehealth services across the state. This will make it easier for families and individuals facing transportation barriers to access care. They’ll be able to complete paperwork online and enroll in virtual services for treatment. Additionally, we’re working on increasing the number of beds available for men and women who are successfully completing our programs, enabling them to transition into supportive housing.
