The Silicon Review
“We provide expert comprehensive education and wraparound training in point-of-care ultrasound to physicians and healthcare providers globally through our blended education and training model and software.”
Global Ultrasound Institute (GUSI) empowers clinicians anywhere to acquire the essential skill of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS), providing them with real-time virtual online mentorship via tele-ultrasound and effectively teaching a manual, hands-on skill virtually. Creating medical content that is both engaging and informative, GUSI makes POCUS accessible to medical specialties beyond emergency medicine, particularly in the outpatient setting. The institute creates an integrated platform with Scan Review, putting the tools in one place including uploading scans. Now learners anywhere in the world can obtain feedback on their scans from a community of POCUS experts.
GUSI was incorporated in 2018.
The Silicon Review reached out to GUSI’s Bay Area headquarters and spoke with Kevin Bergman, co-founder, who serves as the company’s Chief Executive Officer. Here’s what he said.
“We provide expert comprehensive education and wraparound training in point-of-care ultrasound to physicians and healthcare providers globally through our blended education and training model and software.”
POCUS is rapidly becoming a standard of care for clinicians and the fifth pillar of physical examination because it has the power to transform bedside diagnosis, clinical decision making, and procedures, regardless of medical speciality. POCUS has great value for every medical professional that performs a physical exam.
“We educate all medical professionals on POCUS via our wrap-around learning platform and longitudinal teaching model, which includes asynchronous didactics, virtual mentorship, tele-ultrasound, and scan review all of which bring the provider to a place of confidence and competency to use this with their patients.”
“As a result, over 96 percent of participants say that they feel more confident after our training and highly recommend them to colleagues.”
Inspiring Change
POCUS is a revolution transforming the essence of healthcare, which is the clinical interaction between clinician and patient. It allows any trained medical provider to look into the patient’s body in real-time at the bedside and make a more informed clinical decision or do a safer procedure for that patient. Indeed, POCUS is the future of bedside medicine.
Unfortunately, POCUS is still not widely used in most speciality areas. There is a lack of accessible ultrasound training available to clinicians who want to become confident, competent POCUS practitioners.
GUSI meets this critical need by equipping medical professionals of all experience levels and specialties with comprehensive POCUS skills through proven education models. The GUSI faculty are recognized national leaders in POCUS education in their respective specialties. Many are textbook authors, have written multiple research articles, and are from multiple specialties. They help to create content, teach virtually and in-person, and in general transfer their knowledge and passion.
“As ultrasound research and technology develops, there will be newer applications and use cases that require translation into the practice of medicine and we will be at the forefront of this movement.”
“To meet market needs, we continue to grow our network and improve and invest in our software platform (leverage AI, integrate with devices, etc.) to make it easier and more powerful.”
GUSI training is the most accessible way to gain the skills and confidence you need to become a competent POCUS practitioner.
Making a Bigger Impact
GUSI instructors have trained over 2,000 practitioners to date; thousands more have learned POCUS through its Essentials Course. The institute’s longitudinal, online model not only teaches POCUS skills at learners’ own pace, but also gives them access to mentorship with POCUS experts as they retain, refine, and ultimately master those skills.
“We provide over 60 hours of high yield and engaging video didactic content in multiple areas of specialty, from acute care to primary care, sports medicine to pediatrics.”
GUSI’s curriculum is for all medical professionals who perform physical exams, including doctors, nurse practitioners, physicians’ assistants, clinical officers, physical therapists, paramedics, EMTs, nurses, and more.
