Q. What inspired you to pursue a career in corporate law, particularly in the private equity and venture capital sectors, and how has your leadership style evolved throughout your journey?

My passion for empowering innovation and fostering cross-border opportunities inspired me to pursue a career in corporate law, particularly in venture capital. Growing up in India and later practicing law in the U.S., I saw the vast potential for collaboration between these two dynamic markets. I recognized that startups and investors often face legal and regulatory hurdles in pursuing global growth, and I aimed to bridge that gap by offering strategic legal support to help businesses succeed in the U.S.-India ecosystem.

Working with startups and investors, I became fascinated by venture capital’s role in driving innovation and economic growth. This sector’s ability to transform ideas into impactful enterprises deeply resonated with me, leading me to specialize in business structuring, cross-border compliance, and investment strategies to help my clients scale.

My leadership style has evolved over time. Initially focused on technical expertise, I soon realized the importance of relationships, collaboration, and mentorship. Today, my leadership is driven by empathy and inclusivity, whether mentoring entrepreneurs through TiE NY, guiding law students through Legal Sollers, or assisting clients with complex challenges. Speaking engagements at the Indian Embassy in New York have further reinforced the significance of building bridges, championing diversity, and leading with purpose.

Q. What role has mentorship played in shaping your career, and how does this influence your approach to guiding your teams and clients?

Mentorship has been central to my professional journey, shaping my career and leadership style. Early on, I was fortunate to have mentors who guided me through complex legal challenges and cross-border transactions, helping me build confidence, refine my skills, and develop a global perspective, particularly in the U.S.-India ecosystem.

Recognizing the impact mentorship has had on me, I prioritize giving back. Through TiE NY, I mentor entrepreneurs, assisting them with legal and strategic challenges in building scalable ventures. Additionally, through my pro bono venture, Legal Sollers, I guide law students and young professionals, offering practical advice as they navigate their career paths.

This commitment influences my approach to both teams and clients. For teams, I foster an environment of growth and collaboration, empowering ownership while providing support. I prioritize clear communication, constructive feedback, and leadership opportunities. For clients, I adopt a mentorship-style approach, not only addressing legal concerns but also helping them understand the broader implications of their decisions. As a tri-qualified attorney admitted to practice in New York, California, and India, navigating cross-border transactions requires legal expertise, cultural understanding, and strategic problem-solving. Challenges often arise from differing legal systems, regulatory frameworks, and cultural expectations. My approach centers on three pillars: preparation, communication, and adaptability.

Preparation is critical. I dedicate time to understanding the regulatory nuances and legal frameworks of all involved jurisdictions, staying updated on evolving laws and industry trends, especially in the U.S.-India ecosystem. Collaborating with local counsel ensures my clients’ interests are comprehensively safeguarded.

Effective communication is pivotal in leading negotiations. I emphasize clarity, transparency, and cultural sensitivity to align objectives and foster trust among diverse stakeholders. Adaptability is equally essential. Cross-border transactions often present unforeseen hurdles, such as regulatory delays or geopolitical factors. I remain flexible, anticipate challenges, and develop creative, win-win solutions.

My experience in high-stakes transactions, including business structuring, tax implications, and intellectual property concerns, equips me to navigate complexities with a solutions-oriented mindset. My goal is to help clients achieve their business objectives while mastering the intricacies of international markets.

Q. As a woman in corporate law, what unique challenges have you faced, and how have these experiences shaped your perspective on leadership?

As a woman in corporate law, I have faced unique challenges that tested my resilience and profoundly shaped my career. Early in my career, I often had to work harder to establish credibility and ensure my voice was heard, particularly in high-stakes negotiations and cross-border transactions influenced by cultural nuances.

Rather than letting these challenges deter me, I embraced them as opportunities for growth. They reinforced the importance of preparation, composure, and persistence. I learned to communicate confidently, back my arguments with thorough research, and adapt to diverse stakeholders while staying true to my values.

These experiences motivated me to address systemic issues faced by women in corporate law. I recently launched Women in Corporate Law on LinkedIn, a platform to discuss and tackle challenges women encounter daily. This initiative provides mentorship, resources, and strategies to help women overcome barriers and excel in their careers.

This work has shaped my leadership style, rooted in inclusivity, empathy, and empowerment. I strive to create environments where all voices are valued and to mentor women and underrepresented groups to confidently face challenges.

Milestones like speaking at the Indian Embassy in New York and attending the White House’s Diwali celebrations have underscored the importance of representation and breaking barriers. These experiences reaffirm my commitment to fostering diversity and equity in corporate law and equipping future women leaders with the tools they need to thrive.

For emerging leaders, especially women in corporate law and venture capital, my advice centers on three key principles: resilience, visibility, and mentorship.

  1. Resilience: The path to success in corporate law and venture capital is filled with challenges. It’s crucial to stay resilient in the face of setbacks, whether dealing with biases, rejection, or tough negotiations. Resilience means maintaining a long-term vision, learning from each experience, and pushing through obstacles. Overcoming challenges has not only strengthened my legal skills but also deepened my ability to lead with empathy and persistence.
  2. Visibility and Confidence: It’s important to make your presence known in these fields. This doesn’t mean being aggressive, but ensuring your contributions are recognized and advocating for yourself. Speak up in meetings, share insights, and take on projects that demonstrate your expertise. Building a strong personal brand—through networking, speaking engagements, and professional forums—can also help expand your influence.
  3. Mentorship and Building a Support Network: Success doesn’t happen in isolation. Seek mentors who can guide you and help navigate challenges. Mentorship offers invaluable insights, new opportunities, and effective strategies. Equally important is building a supportive network of peers who provide advice and encouragement. As someone who values the opportunity to make a meaningful impact, I appreciate the intersection of social impact and professional responsibility. While I focus on my core legal practice, I believe in contributing to positive change and aligning my work with initiatives that benefit the communities I engage with.

By offering legal counsel to entrepreneurs in developing markets, I help those who may not have access to high-quality representation.
