“We’re thinkers, entrepreneurs, and real-live human beings. We’ll manage and help with every single detail of your Amazon strategy. Use our skills and experience to grow your Amazon business.”
Brands often fail to realize that there is an astonishing number of options to choose from while setting up an e-commerce presence. Every option has its own pros and cons, but only the unique circumstances of business will dictate the right choice. Amazon is one of the world’s most popular e-commerce sites and listing your products on Amazon will help the business reach a highly engaged shopping audience. With over 100 million Prime subscribers reported in 2019, the size of its customer base is huge. When a brand lists its product on Amazon, it has access to this huge pool of established customers. In the past few years, Amazon has expanded greatly and sold millions of different products along with expanding its fulfillment capabilities globally. While Amazon certainly has its benefits, it still poses a major obstacle for many brands.
That said, it has become increasingly difficult to jump on Amazon and start selling. As the platform continues to take on new sellers who don’t always follow the rules, Amazon has had to become more strict in allowing who can sell, what can be sold, and how. Pitted Labs is a company based in Utah that specializes in providing e-commerce solutions – specifically, Amazon consulting, and management services. The company consists of Amazon strategists who have a variety of backgrounds in strategy, operations, finance, and marketing for some of the world’s largest CPG brands (and the smallest startups). Pitted Labs provides Amazon marketing and consulting services for brands looking to grow their sales online, including Amazon account management, advertising, and sales.
In Conversation with Tyler Allgaier – CEO and Founder of Pitted Labs
Q. What motivated you to establish the company?
About three and a half years ago I was working for a CPG startup that was paying an agency to help with our Amazon channel. Being in the accounting department, I saw how much we were paying them and knew that the amount was not in line with the kind of service we were receiving. As an (admittedly) naïve student, I figured, ‘why not?’ and took my accounting and e-commerce background to start Pitted Labs while still in college. The mission has always been to provide the best service possible to every brand we work with.
Q. Do you have plans to expand your services to other e-commerce sites?
Yes, we’ve got plans in our strategic roadmap to expand to other e-commerce platforms like eBay, Walmart, and some of the other international marketplaces. But right now – especially in the US – Amazon is such a dominant player and there’s so much to do on this platform that it remains our short-term plan to focus exclusively on Amazon and absolutely crush it there for our clients.
Q. How do you maintain a strong relationship with your clients?
It’s all about providing the best service and making sure that we address the clients’ needs, so it’s kind of a bottom-up perspective. Amazon follows a similar strategy; it always looks at the customer first. It doesn’t come up with new ideas and then says, “I have to shoehorn the customer into this new idea”. Instead, it looks for what the customer is asking for. What does the customer want? Where are their pain points? We follow the same approach at Pitted Labs where we say, “OK, what are the clients struggling with and where are their pain points? What can we help them with the most?” And then we work back from there. Communication – internally and externally – is key for a service-based company like us.
Q. What do you feel are the reasons behind your company’s reputation?
We’re a service firm and if we don’t provide the best service, what’s the point of our existence? We must first understand the clients’ needs. Secondary to that would be the skills that we have. We’ve got a great team of passionate people who care about the work we do and they care about the e-commerce space. They love their work and they are fascinated by it. We talk with them and say, “Hey you know we read this thing, we’ve seen some data come from it and we’d like to try it with you guys”. We are very much transparent with them and try to stay on the leading edge of what’s happening in the e-commerce space because it changes every single day.
Q. AI is the new buzzword. Do you think companies must embrace AI to increase their business efficiency?
Absolutely, we already use AI in what we do. There are tens, thousands, hundreds of thousands of data points coming in from one brand alone on Amazon. You multiply that by all the different brands we work with and you get hundreds of millions of data points that we could potentially analyze. There’s no way humanly possible to do that. So we rely on AI and Machine Learning programs to help us improve our workflow to be more efficient, more accurate, and make better business decisions.
Q. Do you have any new services ready to be launched?
We’re in the process of launching a social media influencer program because social media influencers have become very popular in launching a new brand and even growing the existing brands. There are about a million different ways to launch products on Amazon and one of them is through influencers. We want to take the monotony and difficulties around sourcing influencers away from our clients’ already full plates and manage that process for them.
