In conversation with Gianluca Ciminata, CEO and Founder of Digital On Things (DOT)

What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful business/IT leader?

Passion plays an important role in shaping a successful leader because passionate leaders are known for being committed and engaged in achieving their goals. Also, they will empower others to achieve theirs. Another important skill is knowledge because every business leader has to be a practitioner as they are also the facilitator of the business. Finally, giving back to the community is an important trait because successful members of the business must help the less fortunate and contribute to the common good.

Can you brief us about the history of your company?

DOT is an “Officina Digitale” Advisors and Digital Makers who drives Digital Transformation for achieving business value faster. We leverage the full power of Design-led approaches and the Salesforce ecosystem to deliver exceptional customer results and accelerate Digital transformations. DOT is based in Europe, with its primary focus in consulting on the Salesforce platform. CIO Application Europe recognized DOT as one of the ten best companies in IoT consulting/ Services Companies.

What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?

Currently, my greatest fear is about the unexpected changes that we have to witness after the end of the Covid-19 pandemic. We are looking for ways to help our clients cope with the cultural and digital change after the crisis. We want to make use of our skills in the Salesforce Digital Platform to prevent the new pandemic from affecting the business.

What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your business, and how did you overcome them?

After working for years in multinational companies, the initial hurdle was to think big but start small. We faced difficulty in finding the right people with the right spirit of approach. DOT is like a family, and if any of our partners, employees, or clients face a problem, it is considered as the company’s problem as well. We work together as a team to overcome hurdles, and the customers are the secret of our success.

What do you hope to accomplish in the long run?  

We are looking forward to expanding our reach in Europe and the USA. An R&D team based in SFO is linked with Europe to achieve this goal. Our idea of innovation coming from the US and knowledge or skills from Europe, still stands headstrong.

‘It is difficult to start a venture. But far more difficult to maintain it’ – How do you interpret this?

Yes, it is challenging, but it is important to work for your goals, passion, and fundamental to achieve success for your client. DOT is a big family where each employee is focused on giving their best for the client and for the company. We are a unique consulting firm because we combined the value of our skills with the value of the SW platform to make it into an amazing tiramisu cake.

What other leaders do you look up to, and why?

Mark Benioff, CEO of SALESFORCE, is the leader I look up to, and he is also my inspiration. He has built an enormous SW company with a Startup Spirit. My idea is to have consulting companies with the same spirit.

Gianluca Ciminata is the CEO and Founder of Digital On Things (DOT). He holds a Ph.D. in information technologies from the ETH ZURICH University. Gianluca completed his master’s degree in knowledge management from the Roma Tre University. He was also a visiting lecturer at Stanford University. Gianluca has served in many positions for various multinational companies, and he has 30 years of experience in the field of IT and sales. He has been with the BIG FIVE companies as VP and Senior Executive Salesforce , Capgemini, Accenture.
