“Our unique technology supports a straightforward and ‘adaptive’ data loss prevention solution”: Clearswift

thesiliconreview-heath-davies-ceo-clearswift-17We live in a society where technical challenges are very real. Mobile, BYOD and cloud are changing the security landscape, creating new business practices and new malware challenges. Our lives depend on online services. We work online and increasingly shop and play online. As our lives increasingly depend on digital services, businesses need to protect our information from being stolen or misused. And here is the relevance that Clearswift provides.

A Safeguard from Potential Threats

Founded in 1982 and headquartered at Reading, United Kingdom, Clearswift is a business that delivers Adaptive Cyber Security and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) Solutions. By protecting the critical information and preventing threats it can bring an end to the digital darker side. Clearswift’s products include its SECURE Email Gateway, a content-aware e-mail gateway; SECURE Web Gateway, a content-aware web gateway; SECURE Exchange Gateway, an internal DLP solution; Critical Information Protection Server and Agent, an endpoint DLP solution; and the Information Governance Server, an information governance solution.

Clearswift has over 2000 customers in 70 countries, across all sectors including government, defense and finance. Clearswift’s cyber security innovations are built around its unique layer of Deep Content Inspection (DCI) which is built into all products, enabling consistency, and also providing the award-winning Adaptive Redaction technology. This provides the agile defense upgrade needed to protect against evasive phishing and ransomware as well defending against the loss of confidential data. The defence division of RUAG acquired the company in January 2017 and is making significant investment in the expansion and long-term development of the business.

Years Before, When It All Began…

Clearswift was founded as NET-TEL. One of the co-founders, John Horton, had previously worked at GEC and Acorn Computers. The sole purpose was to understand the ever-changing digital industry where cyber threats were constantly evolving and to reduce the problems associated with that. Understanding the cyber security landscape was a necessity then and even more so today.

The Introductory Product

The company launched its first product Route400, the world’s first mail client for MS-DOS using the X.400 protocol in 1988, which was later ported to other platforms. Four years after the launch of the first product, the focus was shifted to content filtering to protect against viruses. MIMEsweeper was created and became a global brand. While the product has been superseded, with today’s SECURE Gateway family of products, many of the design principles, such as being easy to use whether you have 25 or 250,000 employees, remain.

Identify, Manage and Protect Your Critical Information with Clearswift

In this digital era, there is an urgency to removing the threats which can result in the loss of critical information. Cyber security threats increase daily as do the requirements from a regulation and compliance perspective to keep information safe, whether it is from a cyber attacker, a malicious insider or an employee making a mistake. Clearswift’s products have been designed with these issues in mind and can be bought separately, or integrated into a single adaptive security platform.

The Clearswift Aneesya Platform: Designed as the cornerstone of an Information Governance Strategy, the Clearswift Aneesya Platform is the fully integrated suite of Clearswift products. The key to its operation is the Clearswift Information Governance Server which acts as the central repository for registered items. It stores metadata from various information sources enabling protection of the information as well as the file. The Clearswift DCI engine enables Adaptive Redaction (AR), a next generation DLP component which protects sensitive and ‘hidden’ data through data redaction and both content and document sanitisation in commonly used document formats. Today’s ransomware and APTs are frequently delivered through innocuous documents, however AR removes these threats automatically and consistently from all documents whether they are in an email or downloaded from the web.

How the Adaptive DLP Is Changing the Scenario

As security threats increase each day, enterprises need more intelligent tools and approaches to protect themselves. The simplest and most cost efficient answer are the adaptive DLP solutions from Clearswift. Data is lost either through direct attacks, malicious insiders or employees making mistakes. The new adaptive DLP provides both content and context-awareness that makes automatic policy-driven decisions on what to stop or allow or modify through AR – based on who is sending what to whom. Unlike traditional DLP solutions which ‘stop and block’ communication, Clearswift provides a disruption-free approach to protecting the unauthorized loss of critical information, enabling secure continuous collaboration which is so important for todays’ global business.
