Interview Highlights

Please provide a brief summary of the events that led to the founding of Red Comet.

Red Comet is a pioneer in digital education and was one of the first companies to address distance learning. The company was founded in Washington State to address a specific problem: educating migrant students who could not consistently attend school because of their economic status. Red Comet was one of the first companies to develop an online solution to address this gap in education. A change in control in 2010 completely changed the business forever. Red Comet flourished and expanded to offer more to students. The company underwent a rigorous accreditation process and sought approvals from different state education departments. It significantly broadened the range of curricula it offered and catered to both gifted and struggling students. Red Comet’s relationships with public and private schools accounted for the steep increase in student enrollment. Today, Red Comet touts itself as a leader in K–12 education with the integration of cutting-edge technologies like virtual and augmented realities into its curricula.

Q. As an educational technology company, what are Red Comet’s key focus areas?

Student engagement and outcomes are Red Comet’s key focus. Red Comet makes digital learning engaging and alluring for students by utilizing cutting-edge technologies. Several audio and visual interactives, gamification, and manipulatives capture students’ attention and encourage them to finish their courses.

Word-of-mouth marketing drove Red Comet’s growth for a number of years. The more engaged students are in their learning, the better their chances are of passing their courses with flying colors. More schools will choose us over our competitors when they see their students succeeding. As more schools select us as their provider of enhanced digital curricula, the number of students enrolled on our platform rises.

Q. Can you introduce us to your services? What are their main features?

Red Comet offers students the complete curriculum from kindergarten to grade 12. In addition to nearly 115 core courses for kindergarten to grade 12, Red Comet also offers over 200 supplementary (electives and career-focused) middle and high school courses. Students have successfully completed over 50,000 courses for credit on the Red Comet platform.

The pace of learning is flexible here. Red Comet gives students the chance to learn in plenty of ways. For those who learn best visually, color, typography, infographics, and videos are helpful. One can switch to black and white if visual input is bothersome. For the benefit of auditory learners, there are numerous aids readily available. AR and VR in education are beneficial for kinesthetic learners. Red Comet has one of the top student outcomes for successful course completion, thanks to its intense focus on fostering student engagement.

Over 530 public schools and over 230 private schools have used Red Comet. Schools use Red Comet for remote/virtual as well as blended learning. Students may also directly enroll by paying for specific Red Comet courses. In addition, Red Comet also manages multiple online charter schools for school districts in the State of Washington, where it markets the program, registers students, enrolls students in specific courses, tracks student progress, and issues progress reports.

Q. Can you provide us with one or two success stories describing the challenges your partner schools faced and how Red Comet helped them overcome those challenges?

Nestled in an Indian Reservation, a public school district that serves a demographic that is nearly 100% poor and 95% minority used Red Comet for several years to achieve one of the highest graduation rates in the entire state of Washington. This school district has consistently and extensively used the Red Comet curriculum for original credit and credit recovery. Another inner-city public high school, one of the most diverse in the country, which served students from fifty different countries, used the Red Comet curriculum for multiple years and saw its graduation rate increase by nearly fifteen percent. A private school in a thriving metroplex uses the Red Comet curriculum to bring cutting-edge STEM education to its high-achieving students.

Red Comet stands out because it defies the odds. Regardless of their race, gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic background, students from urban, rural, public, and private schools all succeed with the Red Comet curriculum. Schools that faced a variety of difficulties and collaborated with Red Comet have seen enormous improvements in students’ academic achievement. With the Red Comet curriculum, students have a lot of freedom to study at their own pace and in any order they choose. They can begin by tackling topics they are most familiar with to build confidence and momentum. Text, infographics, videos, audio, and simulations are all used to break down difficult concepts. All these elements influence student outcomes.

Q. Tell us about the Red Comet team. What value do they bring to the company?

Red Comet employs a diverse team of individuals with various skills. In addition to degrees in computer science, technology, and engineering, several of them are highly experienced educators with national board certification. A strong team culture and the desire to provide students with the best option bind all team members together.

No doubt, Red Comet is charting new territories in this segment. Given how frequently circumstances change, what plans for transformation are you pursuing to remain relevant now and in the future?

The Red Comet team is redefining what learning will look like in the foreseeable future. The curriculum incorporates modern augmented and virtual reality technologies to enhance day-to-day classroom instruction. When pupils are engaged, learning is deeper and retention is higher. With the help of the new technology, they can dissect a beating heart to better understand how it functions and learn about the heart’s structure. When you can disassemble a running car motor in your palm, physics starts to become intriguing. This initiative has already shown enormous potential, and preliminary research on these new technologies has shown better levels of teacher and student involvement.
