This can result in better patient care, increased patient satisfaction, improved cash flow, improved work-life balance for USOSM’s surgeon partners, and much more.

In conversation with Richard J. Hall, CEO of U.S. Oral Surgery Management

Q. What are some of your most noteworthy achievements?

We were founded in November of 2017, and in just a few years, we’ve built the largest and fastest growing network of premier oral and maxillofacial surgeons, nationwide. We have partner practices in 25 states, and all of our partners are board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons. They are the best of the best. USOSM partners are an elite network of well-established, highly skilled, highly trained and highly experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeons. In fact, our partner practices all consistently receive a net promoter score (NPS) of 80 or above, which is considered world-class by Bain & Company, one of the NPS founders. This is particularly telling, when you factor-in that the average NPS for health care providers is only around 38. NPS is reflective of patient/customer satisfaction, and we’re proud that our surgeon partners consistently achieve an NPS of 80 or above.

In addition, since our inception in 2017, USOSM has retained 100% of our surgeon partners. This speaks volumes.

Q. Some people say that partnerships with large companies such as yours could negatively impact health care quality – that the large company may be more focused on the financial aspects of health care and not quality outcomes. Do you agree with this?

USOSM and our surgeon partners are united in our dedication to the highest quality patient care and clinical excellence. We work together with this in mind, which leads to even higher quality health care within our partner practices and helps improve the health care industry as a whole.

We provide financial support, vendor negotiation, training and other resources that enable our surgeon partners to obtain and utilize the latest technology, recruit and retain top clinical and support staff, and more. In addition, our surgeon partners are able to network with and learn from each other. We have the largest and fastest growing network of premier oral and maxillofacial surgeons, nationwide. They are the industry’s top surgeons, collaborating together for the good of all their patients. We also take the time burden off of our surgeon partners by focusing on all of the behind-the-scenes business details, allowing them to focus 100% on clinical excellence and patient care. That leads to better quality health care, across the board. It’s better for us, for our surgeon partners, for their patients and for the health care industry as a whole.

Q. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful CEO?

I think the top skill is listening. You have to actively listen to everyone on the team and respond appropriately. It’s also very important to keep the team focused and on-mission. When you do that, the company and its people are better positioned for success. In addition, you have to be able to motivate your team to work toward common goals and achieve desired outcomes.

Q. What is your company’s M&V statement?

Our vision is to become the oral and maxillofacial surgery management firm that is best known for our people, paradigm, partnerships and performance. Our mission is the everyday extension of this vision: to partner with premier oral and maxillofacial surgeons to help them enhance their clinical missions and their successes – both today and tomorrow.

Q. What do you feel are the reasons behind your company’s success?

Everything we just talked about contributes to success – staying true to our mission and values, building a company that’s trustworthy, putting our surgeon partners and their patients first – these are all integral to who we are and they enable us to be successful. We also have a unique business model. Each of our surgeon partners has a substantial, financial stake in the company as a whole, so all 180+ surgeon partners across the country are working together toward shared financial success. We are a team, and our success hinges on that collaboration.

Q. What does the future hold for your company and your clients? Are exciting things on the way?

We’ve just come out of an incredible year of growth – adding $100 million in acquired revenue in 2022. We also closed on a new round of funding – a $125 million credit expansion with our existing lenders. This new round of financing will position us for similar growth in 2023 and carry us well into 2024.

Given the state of the economy, credit markets are particularly tight right now. Only companies with well-established track records and exceptional performance will have access to capital at reasonable terms. USOSM’s performance provided our lenders with the confidence to expand their commitment. This additional dry powder and our track record of timely closings will give future partners confidence to close, enabling us to continue expanding our network of world-class oral surgery practices.
