Interview Excerpt: Mark Zides, Founder & CEO

Why was the company set up? How did you select the vertical and decide to be a part of the global platform?

CoreAxis was founded to address a growing need by Fortune 1000 companies to find a true partner to help them drive their learning and development initiatives forward. While large consulting firms were readily available to provide strategy, companies often got bogged down in the challenges of executing on those strategies. I observed these trends, and decided to bring to market an organization that was specifically focused on helping firms have the resources they need to deliver their most critical learning and development initiatives.

What challenges did you face in your initial years? What can your peers learn from it?

In the early stages of our business, we spent a substantial amount of time developing strong and trusted relationships with both our prospective clients, and with the learning and development experts who form the foundation of our consulting practice. Trust takes time to develop, and in the early years, we leaned heavily on the relationships that I had built over the course of my career, as we had not yet developed a strong brand presence. Every organization that enters this marketplace wants to rapidly connect with new clients, but it is essential to build that sense of trust through the delivery of exceptional service, and that takes time.

What were the grounds on which you have expanded your company and its offerings over the years?

We have seen a strong and consistent demand for the services we provide. Because the majority of our work is in custom learning solutions, we are able to provide a more tailored solution than many of our competitors.

One of the key elements our clients look to us to provide is innovation. We make sure that we stay well-informed on market trends, so we can advise our clients on where to invest their learning and development budgets to ensure that they are leveraging the best of new technology, without ending up on the wrong side of a tool that’s not ready for prime time. We bring the most innovative tools and resources to the table to give our customers the best of what’s new.

We have also seen increasing demand for Strategic Talent Management Growth Strategies. This is where we bring industry experts to the table to tackle our clients’ toughest issues, and design strategies to leverage talent for competitive advantage.

What are the biggest assets to your organization? What would they be and why?

Our biggest asset is now, and has always been our people. Without a strong, dedicated team of talented consultants who pride themselves on delivering exceptional service, we would not be able to have the strong relationships we have with our customers. Our core values are summed up as:

What kind of mixed responses have you received from your customers over the years? How have they motivated you to shape your offerings/grow the company?

The learning and development function has evolved rapidly over the last 15 years that CoreAxis has been in business. We haveseen the rise of new technology, as well as substantial advances in the science of learning. These two trends are coming together to bring talent strategy to the forefront for many organizations as they define their competitive advantage in attracting and retaining top talent. We have responded to these changes by continuously evolving our capabilities to meet the needs, both current and future, of our client partners.
