“We are servant leaders. We never forget who we work for. Our clients are the reason we’re successful.”

When you go to the grocery store and make a purchase, the receipt you receive at the end of your visit is fairly self-explanatory. Two dozen eggs, a carton of milk, three pounds of bananas — each with an itemized cost and totaled up at the bottom. It’s relatively easy to spot an error, such as seeing two cartons of milk on your bill when there is only one carton in your bag.

Compare this to a medical bill you might receive from a doctor or a hospital. A quick glance reveals a document of byzantine complexity resplendent with “test codes” and “CPT codes.” Spotting an error is very different.

In light of the above-mentioned scenario, we’re thrilled to present ImagineSoftware – a medical billing software company.

The company was incorporated in 2000 and is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Sam Khashman, ImagineSoftware President/CEO, spoke exclusively to The Silicon Review. Below is an excerpt.

Can you brief us about the history of your company?

“If you can imagine it, they can do it.” A statement proclaimed by one of our very first clients that shaped the future of the company. Technology Partners, LLC (DBA ImagineSoftware) was incorporated and launched as a workflow and document imaging company. After successfully developing enterprise-wide analysis and financial systems in 2002, the company began to focus on the healthcare IT sector by 2003.

From our inception, we have continued to focus on delivering high-quality services to our clients, but the goal remains the same: to be the leading healthcare revenue cycle management platform. Used by over 46,000 physicians in all 50 states, ImagineSoftware is committed to innovative development and intuitive revenue cycle management solutions, helping clients achieve peak performance and measurable results by streamlining the billing and collections workflow, improving staff productivity and increasing practice profitability.

Always innovating, ImagineSoftware became a first mover in the industry after implementing artificial intelligence (AI) within its product suite. ImagineAI™, as it is aptly named, allows health providers to gather detailed patient demographics and payor information while customizing billing messaging based on patients’ ability to pay their medical bills. The system learns and adjusts over time to maximize revenue without compromising compliance.

Q. There is nothing more important for a successful small business than a well-defined mission and vision statements. Can you explain your M&V statements in brief?

Vision: To be the leading healthcare revenue cycle management platform.

Mission: To drive the success of our clients, partners, and employees by creating dynamic systems and a culture of excellence.

Core Values: Innovation, motivation, accountability, genuine, integrity, no-excuses attitude, and excellence. These are the core values that we follow every day to drive the success of our clients, partners and employees.

Q. ‘It is difficult to start a venture, but far more difficult to maintain it’. How would you interpret this saying?

When you first start building a company, there are a lot of hats to wear. Everyone is working towards creating a sustainable, viable product line and managing that becomes front of mind. Over time, with growth and success, priorities crystalize, and this is when leadership becomes paramount. I had to take the next step, lead by example and truly rely on my team, their abilities, and their willingness to grow. Complete transparency and empowering our team to collaborate and trust each other became a cornerstone of our operations. Instead of simply handing out work we had to rally around Vision, Mission, and Values with clear direction and accountability.

Moreover, changing the mindset from a manager to the leader can pose interesting challenges like self-awareness of strengths, weaknesses and surrounding myself and my team with like minded people who would take the company in the right direction. These challenges, opportunities in disguise, became the key to growth and sustainable success. In doing so, I am proud to say that we practice servant leadership and truly feel I have been able to assist others around me to develop the type of leadership that encourages a team mentality, a company culture second to none, and an undying focus on our clients. Imagine is a family, and we’ve all formed a cohesive sounding board to drive innovation within our organization, offering suggestions and opinions for improving projects and processes while learning and respecting each other.

Q. What other leaders do you look up to, and why?

I look up to quite a few leaders. Two that stand out are Henry Ford and Steve Jobs. The vision both men possessed for innovating and capitalizing on new and existing markets is astounding. They were able to leverage their knowledge and surround themselves with the best teams to accomplish great things and make so many products that have truly revolutionized our world today, from the automobile to the iPhone. The desire to keep learning and creating is an innate quality that each held; one I feel a leader must cultivate to be successful.

Q. If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

Practice a form of servant leadership and make sure that your words and actions match. Restate the vision statement as often as you can and ensure that the company values are in people’s hearts and minds, not just on the wall. Lead by example, be confident and trust your team. Course correct when necessary and always be open to feedback. Don’t become the bottleneck in making tough decisions, but admit to yourself when you need help, and then find it.

Q. What are your future focus areas?

I see taking ImagineSoftware to the next level by leveraging smarter technology and designing new tools that will continue to set us apart in the industry. There is more opportunity than ever to capitalize on our success while realizing huge goals. We plan to add additional strong resources to our team while expanding our reach within the healthcare ecosystem. Additionally, we will leverage new and existing partnerships to give our clients the solutions they need to navigate healthcare billing and reimbursement effectively.
