“The strategy of KWHCoin is to build a global network of renewable energy nodes to provide the physical and virtual assets for its blockchain to aggregate and collaborate the global renewable energy assets”
On an electricity grid, electrons generated from the sun, wind, or other renewable sources are indistinguishable from those generated by fossil fuels. To keep track of how much clean energy is produced; governments around the world have created systems based on tradable certificates.
Problem is, the way we manage these certificates “sucks,” and it’s holding up investment in renewable power, says Jesse Morris, an energy expert at the Rocky Mountain Institute. A new system based on blockchain, the technology at the heart of Bitcoin and other digital currencies, could fix this, he says.
In light of the above mentioned, we are thrilled to present KWHCoin – a blockchain-based community, ecosystem and cryptocurrency backed by units of clean, renewable energy. Physical units of kWh energy are leveraged from multiple sources including smart meters, sensor readings and green button data. This measurable output is tokenized on the blockchain to create KWH tokens.
KWHCoin was incorporated in 2017 and is headquartered in San Jose, CA.
Interview Excerpt: Girard Newkirk, Founder/CEO
Why was the company set up? And how did you expand your company and its offerings over the years?
The company was established to develop an ecosystem of clean renewable energy for the better benefit of humanity. In order to expand our vision, we sought out international partnerships through media marketing and attending networking events.
In this modern business world, what do you exactly mean by “A Smart Company”?
Smart company essentially means smart technology, which is what block-chain technology is. The platform that we are building, using blockchain technology, will create a renewable energy ecosystem that uses the Internet as the rail to deliver and exchange clean energy with no central authority or trusted third party as controlling the platform. This provides the opportunity for individuals to take ownership and control of their energy future and also delivers a platform to monetize energy-related work. The collection, storage, and tokenization of distributed energy resources make KWHCoin a viable option as the digital currency of choice for the emerging internet of energy.
How successful was your first project roll on? Share the experience.
We had our presale in Dec 2017 and sold 15 million coins in 48 hours of going live which totalled to be 1 million USD then held our ICO early Feb. The total amount raised was about 2 million. We have since then begun development in Orocovis, Puerto Rico and have also signed an MOU with Nurse In Hand organization in Nairobi, Kenya where we will install 21 solar powered medical facilities along a 900-mile long road that connects Nairobi to the port of entry. We are also partnering with Teleficent to install micro-grids to power 50,000 homes in Sierra Leone.
Is your company a ‘leader’ or a ‘follower’? Do you formulate your own core value?
Our company is a leader from its inception – our mission is to provide electricity to the 1.2 billion people that do not have access. In addition, our social impact agenda focuses on providing resources for the homeless and disadvantaged.
We have received a lot of constructive feedback from our community that has allowed us to make sure we streamline our message and develop a model that is useful to all. The community is our biggest support and can provide us with advantages/disadvantages to better strengthen our company.
A company to be one the SMARTEST, its employees must be open-minded and creative, they need to feel they have a decent outlet for sharing their observations and ideas, is this true with your company?
Absolutely, we welcome all ideas to seize every opportunity at becoming a bigger and better company. We believe everyone has something to offer and that a fresh outlook on a new area can often prove fruitful. We are building an entire ecosystem that is not currently established. We plan to implement block-chain technology with renewable clean energy, to provide millions of people with electricity and weaken the world’s dependence on fossil fuels.
Customer service varies, but companies can still be successful. How do you maintain your customers’ trust and loyalty?
All our goals at KWHCoin are based around building and maintaining a strong community with belief in the project and its mission. To build a strong and active community, we reach out on all relevant forums and internet websites. Specifically: Reddit, Github, Medium, Slack, Facebook, Twitter, and Bitcointalk. We maintain the trust and loyalty by staying true to our word and delivering what we set forth.
Do you have any new products ready to be launched?
The KWHCoin development team is actively developing a blockchain based application to serve as the platform for the collaboration of renewable energy resources. This is where users can connect peer to peer and will have an open view of generation sources and where there is demand. More specifically:
As a question on sustainability, where do you see your company a couple of years from now?
KWHCoin is currently developing partnerships to become the World’s Largest Renewable Energy Blockchain in Puerto Rico. We are lighting the world and impact investing in an environmentally responsible project that is also delivering the value of global renewable energy services and is laying the infrastructure for the internet of energy projected to be a $150 billion industry by 2020. KWHCoin is on the edge of developing a platform that will encourage sustainability and the emergence of a distributed clean power grid on a global scale.
