Apple to invent a new way to eliminate greenhouse gases from aluminum smelting

Apple has long been using aluminum as a key material in its product range. Now the company is planning to devise new ways of producing aluminum that would help in reducing the damage caused to the environment. Apple has partnered with the Canadian government and the industrial manufacturers, Alcoa and Rio Tinto, to substitute the aluminum smelting process with a patented technology that eliminates the emission of green house gases. This can bring about a revolution in the manufacturing process of widely used metals in the world.

Apple is committed to advancing technologies that are good for the planet and help protect it for generations to come,” Tim Cook said in a release tied to today’s news. “We are proud to be part of this ambitious new project, and look forward to one day being able to use aluminum produced without direct greenhouse gas emissions in the manufacturing of our products.” Apple is supposed to invest $144 million along with its partners in the process.

Alcoa and Rio Tinto have formed a joint venture, Elysis, for the large scale production and commercialization of the technology, which might be available for sale in 2024. Lately, Apple has been focusing on becoming as eco-friendly as possible, and this effort clearly indicates that. It also announced that it depends on renewable energy for its power and revealed its latest recycling robot, Daisy.
