New Technology Helps in Dengue Fight: Mass Production of Mosquitoes to Control Disease Carrying Mozzies

New Technology Helps in Dengue Fight: Mass Production of Mosquitoes to Control Disease Carrying Mozzies

The new cutting-edge technology is what scientists needed to control the mass-production of mosquitoes so that it can be easier to conduct research. This research consists of ways that can help in controlling infected mozzies. For now, scientists believe that infecting male mozzies with Wolbachia bacteria will allow in reducing the number of disease-carrying mozzies. It is simply because once these male mozzies are infected with the bacteria it is later set out on the open. Further, it seeks female mozzies to mate with. Once the matting process is done, the eggs won’t hatch due to the bacteria. Thus, reducing the number of disease-carrying mozzies. Another important thing to remember is that the scientists need male mozzies which do not feed on human blood.

The study on Wolbachia and mozzies started in 2016, which was later expanded in April this year. Although getting enough male mozzies was a problem, scientists soon overcame this speed bump by collaborating with the National Environment Agency (NEA). Further, a local start-up Orinno Technology and Verily is also part of the whole project.

This is a huge step in controlling dengue and other diseases on a very large scale. This might expand in other countries as well. Let us see how far this new step goes.
