Walmart Utilizes Blockchain Te...Walmart, one of the biggest players in retail will use Blockchain Technology to pin down contaminated green leafy vegetables. The company announced the process on Monday after carrying out a two-year pilot project.
The blockchain is widely used in bitcoins, but the retail giant will use it to keep track of every bag of spinach and head of lettuce.
It is expected that, by this time in 2018, the farms which supply green leafy vegetables will have to input details about the food items into a blockchain-based database. IBM Food trust is developing the blockchain-based technology for Walmart and other retailers such as Dole, Wegmans, and Unilever, who are exploring similar moves.
The initiative by Walmart will help them to strengthen their digital savvy and produce quality food products for the consumers. The company can also cut down on expenses by using Blockchain. If any disease related to food like E.coli outbreak affecting romaine, then the food will be discarded that were contaminated. Several companies have tested the Blockchain, which also includes the version used by Walmart. The technology which is used has different databases with no coins involved and different from Bitcoin Blockchain but the Walmart database will be able to utilize only by certain people.
