Blockchain Technology to Help Homeless in America

Blockchain Technology to Help Homeless in America
The Silicon Review
18 June, 2018

It seems that blockchain technology is opening gates for a plethora of opportunities to provide services. Using the technology, the city of Austin is piloting a program in which homeless will be given a unique identifier to seek out crucial services. Blockchain, which is linked and secured, using cryptography, is a shared database which would potentially circumvent outdated systems and build long-lasting solutions for cities.

According to a new research, 43% of families struggle for basic necessities like food and housing. If used effectively, the technologies like blockchain, IoT (Internet of Things), and smart cities can even benefit the weaker section of societies. For instance, we can use blockchain enabled ‘microgrids’ in future to facilitate customers with power exchange, in which they can sell their surplus energies.

Although it can be well understood that it is difficult to cater services like transaction facilities, property dealings etc. to a poor family because they are most likely to have debts and unpaid bills, and hence do not have good credibility. So, blockchain strives to build a network which will provide solutions for alternate transaction facilities. Casting votes are also one crucial issue, and not every section of society equally participates in it. Being able to vote from home is the need of the hour and blockchain is a secure enough system that can make this a reality.

This tremendous technology has enough potential. It can redefine the way we live in a society, make it more inclusive network where we feel closer to each other.
