Door delivery by autonomous cars could be a reality

A wise man once said that necessity was the mother of all invention. That’s one of the reasons why we develop technology, to make our lives more comfortable and convenient. The rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning gave rise to autonomous vehicles which in turn have numerous applications and stand to revolutionize the automobile industry. Taking the concept of customer convenience one step further, Cruise is teaming up with DoorDash to bring about home delivery of food and groceries through self-driven cars. Cruise is the self-driving car subsidy of General Motors and aims to broaden its offerings to attract more customers.

Going to the supermarket or restaurant for food or groceries is now easier thanks to the ubiquity of e-commerce. The ability to order all manner of stuff from the comfort of the couch was considered the height of convenience. However, it is unclear as to how would autonomous vehicles doing the deliveries would be more beneficial for customers since they won’t have to worry about physically leaving their homes. But, what is clear is that autonomous cars doing deliveries would be extremely beneficial for e-commerce corporations, who employ thousands of people to do the deliveries. All the people working in delivery could see their source of livelihood disappear.

The testing for this technology will begin in early 2019 and will allow Cruise to perfect its technology and also garner a significant customer base.
