Social media giant, Facebook has rolled out a meme making app called ‘Whale’ on the Canadian App store. Their availability on other markets has not been confirmed yet but they are expected to release it internationally in the next couple of months. The app listing confirms that it was developed by Facebook’s New Product Experimentation (NPE) team which was set up earlier this year to develop and test new apps for social media networking platforms. ‘Whale’ is their latest product following the music app ‘AUX’ and their chat app ‘Bump’. Facebook remarks that these apps are supposed to help the company discover new features and services that the users would find enjoyable.
The ‘Whale’ app is quiet simple to use. You can choose a picture from your camera roll or take a new picture. You then embark on a journey of meme making with texts, images, filters, effects and emojis. Users can choose from blank 2 grid, 3 grid and 4 grid canvas layouts. There is also a freeform drawing tool if the user feels artistic enough to draw their own meme. This seems like a great opportunity for people who enjoy making memes.
Facebook is currently focusing on investing in apps as it faces fierce competition from other social media and communication apps like the Chinese developed app, TikTok. However, there already exist countless meme making apps on the app stores that are available for Android and iOS devices.
