This Indian App Could Be the Next TikTok!

After New Delhi banned TikTok in India, there was ample space to be filled. Mohalla Tech, a Bangalore-based company, was quick to drop the Moj app to fill the void. The short-form video app has amassed an impressive 120 million monthly users already – and still growing.

Moj is today enjoying popularity among many Indian Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities following the ban on TikTok, which was popular among the masses in the country not too long ago. The app continues to amass users by the day.

The name behind Moj is a Bangalore-based startup Mohalla Tech, which is also the creator of popular regional language social media platform ShareChat. Founded in 2015, the parent company of Moj yesterday closed a high-profile Series E as Snap and Twitter too joined other investors to pour in half a billion dollars collectively. The company managed to raise $502 million in the funding round, which Tiger Global and Lightspeed Venture Partners led. Mohalla Tech is now valued at $2.1 billion.

“We are at an exciting inflection point in our journey, where we are going after a massive opportunity with the right team in place and the backing of long-term investors who have a deep conviction in our mission. With ShareChat and Moj, we are well-positioned to build the largest AI (artificial intelligence)-powered content ecosystem in India,” said Ankush Sachdeva, CEO and Co-Founder, ShareChat.

Considering the incredible user acquisition in a short period of time, Moj could set sights offshore. It would be interesting to see if that happens anytime soon.
