Instagram said the user's precise location is never shared

Instagram said the user's precise location

Instagram said that viral claims suggesting location tags on content could reveal users' exact locations are false.

Viral videos and posts have claimed that a "precise location" toggle in-app location settings on Android and iOS devices could share the exact location of someone with other Instagram users. These viral posts also suggested this resulted from an iOS or Instagram update. But Instagram said this feature does not share locations with other users.

The precise location feature was first revealed for iOS, and in 2021 Google introduced it in Andriod. This feature allows users to provide some apps with a more accurate location. It was liked when it was first released, while some viewed it today as a controversial feature. Some of the viral videos and posts said that due to the update, people could find the exact location when sharing your location on stories or posts. They also claimed that people would still be able to see where you are precise as a pin on a map even if users post a general city location.

PR team, InstagramComms said they don't share users' locations with others. They added that the precise location is used for location tags and maps features like other social media companies.
