The scientist said the New Mal...According to scientists at the University of Oxford, they have developed a malaria vaccine with "world-changing" potential
The team of scientists expects the vaccine to be rolled out next year. The trials of the vaccine showed up to 80% protection against the deadly disease. According to the scientists, the vaccine is very cheap and they also have a deal to manufacture more than 100 million doses a year. The charity Malaria No More very excitedly said that this progress in making malaria vaccine means children dying from this fatal disease could end “in our lifetimes”.
It took more than a century to develop effective vaccines for the malaria parasite. The reason is, this parasite spread by mosquitoes, is spectacularly elusive and complex. It is shifting forms inside the host body and constantly moving targets, making it hard to immunize against.
Last year, the World Health Organization gave a green signal for the first vaccine. It was developed by pharmaceutical giant GSK and it was to be used in Africa. However, the team of scientists at the University of Oxford claims that their approach to make the vaccine is more effective and can be manufactured on a far greater scale.
