Amazon UK is expanding its electric-cargo bike fleet to enable more deliveries on foot to accelerate decarbonization of the transportation network the company uses. The electric cargo- bike fleet has 75,000 permanent UK employees who deliver to small delivery hubs in London and also Manchester. New hubs are to be added as a part of a five-year investment in decarbonization and electrification in Britain. Amazon is targeting net-zero carbon by 2040 and is introducing extra e-cargo bikes and four-wheeled vehicle with handlebars and containers on the back to carry out 2 million deliveries in a year. The tech giant delivered more than 45 million packages in 2021 using its electric fleet. Amazon also has 1000 electric delivery vans and fully electric heavy goods vehicles in its fleet.
Amazon's UK country manager John Boumphrey said in a statement,"These new hubs will not only bring our customers more electric-powered deliveries, but also support local authorities looking for ways to reduce congestion and find alternative transportation methods.”
