A study found the magic mushroom compound psilocybin can treat depression

magic mushroom

Data from the largest trial on psychedelics ever conducted found that the naturally occurring psychedelic compound psilocybin, in mushrooms can significantly reduce symptoms of depression

This compound was provided to 233 patients who had already tried at least two antidepressants in the past but little succeeded. This compound not only worked but also suggested that the compound could have huge benefits for people suffering from hard-to-treat depression. Just after receiving psilocybin patients for between four and six hours entered a “walking dream-like” state but were able to leave the clinic as soon as they returned to their normal state.

The trial found that, if given alongside psychological support a 25mg dose of psilocybin triggers a reduction in levels of depression, just in three weeks of treatment. This study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine on Thursday and it was carried out internationally by London-based COMPASS Pathways.

Worldwide, around 100 million people suffer from depression that is resistant to treatment. Thus, according to consultant psychiatrist and senior clinical lecturer at King’s College London, James Rucker, the findings of the study are a step in the right direction.
