Mr. Musk said that Twitter will charge $8 monthly to users who want a blue tick indicating a verified account.
After a $44 billion takeover of the social media site, Mr. Musk said as part of the changes it was "essential to defeat spam/scam". A blue tick next to the username is for a high-profile figure and is currently for free. According to the critics, this move on Twitter could make it harder to identify reliable resources.
Twitter introduced the old system of blue tick verification in 2009 after the company faced a lawsuit with an accusation of not doing enough to prevent imposter accounts. The billionaire criticized the old method by calling it a lord and peasants system. He said that the paid users would have priority in searches, replies, and half as many advertisements. While introducing the new system, Musk said "Power to the people! Blue for $8/month"
However, Elon Musk is facing a hefty challenge as he works to overhaul the business of Twitter, which has not posted a profit in years. According to him, he wants to reduce Twitter's reliance on advertising and even some companies have grown concerned about advertising on the platform under his leadership.
