Tailored cancer medicine for p...People with untreatable cancers have had their immune systems redesigned to fight against their own tumors.
The experimental study involved 16 patients and has been called a "leap forward" and a "powerful" demonstration of the potential of such technology. A different treatment was developed for each person, targeting the specific weak spot in the tumor. However, it is too early to fully access the effectiveness of the therapy and it is also time-consuming and expensive.
The trial on the treatment involved people with breast, lung, or colon cancers, who had failed to respond to other prior treatments. This study was designed to test the feasibility and safety of the technology and it also showed that the modified cells were finding their way into the tumor. The disease stabilized in five patients but continues to grow and get worse in the other 11. However, it will take large studies to know the correct dose and its effectiveness.
The results were published in the journal Nature and presented at a meeting of the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer. The head of the immunology service at Clinic Hospital in Barcelona, Dr. Manel Juan, said it was "extraordinary work" and one of the most advanced in the field.
