Moldova adopts a cybersecurity law backed by the EU

"Moldova has adopted best cyber security practices from the European Union, which will facilitate regional and international communication."

Moldova's recently enacted national cybersecurity law will go into effect on January 1, 2025. The Moldova cyber security quick assistance initiative assisted in the development of the national cybersecurity law. According to the law, the competent authority of Moldova determines the institutions and service providers that will be needed to achieve the required degree of cybersecurity based on a variety of criteria. In the future, these critical service providers will be required to disclose severe cyber events to the competent Moldovan authorities.

"Because of Moldova's vulnerable geopolitical position between the European Union and Russia, security, including cybersecurity, is a fundamental goal on the Moldovan agenda. When developing cybersecurity policy, we adopted best practices from the European Union, which will facilitate regional and international communication while also helping to improve the security and resilience of Moldova's cyberspace," said Dumitru Alaiba, Moldova's deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization.

It is also reported that experts from the Estonian e-Governance Academy (eGA) have played a major role in assisting the cybersecurity developers in the formulation of the all-new Cybersecurity Law, which comes as part of the EU-funded Moldova Rapid Assistance Project.
