Bimbo Bakeries USA launched Microgrid System at Six California Bakeries

Bimbo Bakeries USA, Inc. has unveiled its on-site microgrid system at six of its California bakeries. This initiative was developed through an Energy Services Agreement with GreenStruxure, which designed and constructed the microgrids featuring solar arrays paired with battery storage. These six microgrid systems now contribute nearly 20% of Bimbo Bakeries USA's energy consumption, resulting in an estimated annual reduction of 1,700 tons of CO2 emissions. GreenStruxure, responsible for operating and maintaining the system, offers Bimbo Bakeries USA full visibility into the portfolio's performance via its digital platform. This includes insights into zero-carbon energy usage, peak demand management, and optimized grid and on-site energy utilization.

The selection of the six California bakeries—Montebello, Placentia, Oxnard, San Luis Obispo, South San Francisco, and Sacramento—was based on factors such as energy intensity, rising utility electricity costs, and the potential for decarbonization impact. Bimbo Bakeries USA and GreenStruxure are already considering additional sites for future deployment to further support California's renewable energy expansion efforts. As a member of RE100 and an EPA Green Power Partner, Bimbo Bakeries USA has been recognized for its commitment to clean energy initiatives, winning the Green Power Leadership Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2022.
