AMD's Gaming Solutions Revenue Plummets by 48% in Q1 2024, Signaling Potential Delay for Radeon RX 8000-series RDNA 4 GPUs

Gaming Solutions Revenue Plummets Delay
The Silicon Review
02 May, 2024

The first quarter of 2024 saw AMD's gaming business earn $922 million, a notable drop from $1.757 billion in the same period last year

In a sudden turn of events, AMD's gaming solutions revenue has taken a nosedive, plummeting by a staggering 48% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2024. This significant decline comes as sales of the company's processors for gaming consoles, including Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox, experienced a notable downturn. Additionally, demand for AMD's Radeon discrete graphics cards saw a decrease, further contributing to the dip in revenue.

The first quarter of 2024 saw AMD's gaming business earn $922 million, a notable drop from $1.757 billion in the same period last year. Despite still managing to post an operating income of $151 million, down from $314 million a year ago, the decline paints a concerning picture for the company's gaming segment. Jean Hu, AMD's CFO, attributed the decline in semi-custom SoC sales to the natural progression of the console cycle, now entering its fifth year. Looking ahead, AMD anticipates a bleak outlook for its gaming revenue, with expectations of a decline of around 30% year-over-year in the first half of 2024. This pessimistic forecast extends to the second half of the year, with AMD indicating even worse results.

As the company braces for continued challenges in the gaming market, speculation looms regarding the fate of the much-anticipated Radeon RX 8000-series RDNA 4 GPUs. With rumors circulating about a potential delay in their launch, questions arise about AMD's strategy and its ability to compete effectively in the high-end GPU market dominated by Nvidia.
