Today, Google announced the completion of a significant expansion of its data center and cloud region campus in Singapore, elevating its total investment in the country's technical infrastructure to US$5 billion, a substantial increase from US$850 million in 2018. This development was unveiled at the "Sustainable Data Centers with Google" event, with Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information, Dr. Janil Puthucheary, gracing the occasion as the Guest-of-Honor. The expansion highlights Google’s commitment to bolstering its digital services infrastructure. The Singapore data centers are crucial in supporting Google’s vast array of services, including Search, Maps, and Workspace, which cater to billions of users globally. Additionally, these centers are instrumental in delivering AI capabilities to businesses and individuals across Singapore.
Currently, over 500 employees work in Google’s data centers in Singapore. The new cloud region offers high-performance, low-latency services, catering to large enterprises, startups, and public sector organizations. These clients benefit from stringent security, data residency, and compliance standards, essential for maintaining robust data storage requirements. Singapore is one of 11 countries hosting Google data centers, contributing to the 40 cloud regions and 121 zones worldwide. This expansion meets the rising demand for cloud services, complementing strategic initiatives like AI Trailblazers, Google for Startups Accelerator: AI First Singapore, and Skills Ignition SG. It aligns with Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0, aiming to position the nation as a regional data center hub.
A Google-commissioned report by Access Partnership projects that by 2030; AI-powered solutions could provide Singapore businesses with US$147.6 billion in economic benefits, underscoring the transformative potential of AI in driving economic growth.
