Governor Meeting Concludes: No Invitation Yet

Thalapathy Vijay met with Tamil Nadu's acting Governor Arlekar at Raj Bhavan in Chennai today. The meeting lasted approximately 40 minutes. Former Goa Chief Minister and current Kerala Governor Arlekar is serving as the acting Governor of Tamil Nadu after incumbent R.N. Ravi travelled to West Bengal for administrative duties.

Sources indicate that the meeting was cordial but inconclusive. No formal invitation to form the government has been extended to TVK as of yet.

TVK has successfully managed to bring coalition partners on board, raising their total to 113 seats just 5-6 seats short of the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Does governor has the power to decide who is chief minister if not met with the majority?

There are rumours circulating that the Governor does not have the power to invite the single largest party to form the government. However, constitutional experts point to established Supreme Court precedents that suggest otherwise.

The landmark S.R. Bommai case (1994) and subsequent Karnataka precedents have established that the Governor's discretion is limited. The Supreme Court has repeatedly held that the Governor must invite the single largest party or pre-poll alliance to form the government and prove its majority on the floor of the House.

TVK to Approach Supreme Court

Frustrated by the delay, TVK leadership is now preparing to approach the Supreme Court, citing the S.R. Bommai precedent and the Karnataka case law. The party argues that as the single largest party with 113 seats just 5 short of majority they have the first right to form the government and prove their numbers on the floor of the Assembly.

Why the Governor Holds the Cards?

Despite constitutional limits, the Governor retains certain discretionary powers:

  • The Governor can take time to "verify" the majority
  • The Governor can ask for letters of support from coalition partners
  • The Governor can invite the party that "appears" most likely to form a stable government
  • The Governor can recommend President's Rule in case of a hung assembly

This discretionary window is what concerns TVK leadership. Every hour of delay strengthens the argument for alternatives including potential rival coalitions or, in a worst-case scenario, President's Rule.

Why Tvk’s Chief Thalapathy Vijay under Pressure?

For the first time since the landslide election victory, Thalapathy Vijay is feeling the heat. The man who swept 108 seats in his debut election now faces a constitutional maze that his cinema scripts never had to navigate.

The pressure is multi-layered:

  • Political pressure: Keeping coalition partners united while 5-6 seats short
  • Legal pressure: Preparing a Supreme Court petition while simultaneously negotiating with the Governor
  • Public pressure: Millions of supporters expecting immediate government formation
  • Historical pressure: The first actor-politician since MGR to come this close expectations are sky-high

What Happens Next?

The coming hours and days will determine whether Thalapathy Vijay's political revolution translates into government formation or descends into a constitutional crisis. If the Governor invites TVK to form the government within the next 48 hours, the party will have the opportunity to prove its majority on the floor of the House within a stipulated time frame a scenario that would allow Vijay to take oath as Chief Minister while continuing to negotiate with additional coalition partners. However, if the Governor continues to delay, TVK is preparing to move the Supreme Court, citing the landmark S.R. Bommai precedent. An expedited hearing could compel the Governor to act, but a prolonged legal battle could push government formation back by weeks, testing the patience of coalition partners and supporters alike.

There is also the possibility however remote that the Governor explores alternative alliances, inviting either the DMK or AIADMK to attempt to stitch together a coalition government if they can demonstrate a majority. While this scenario seems unlikely given the anti-incumbency wave that swept TVK to power, the Governor's discretionary powers leave the door slightly ajar. The most dreaded scenario for TVK would be the imposition of President's Rule, which would dissolve the Assembly and trigger fresh elections. For a party that has just won a historic mandate, fresh elections would be a devastating blow, squandering the momentum of a debut victory and forcing Vijay to fight the same battle all over again. For now, all eyes remain on Raj Bhavan and the Supreme Court, as Tamil Nadu holds its breath.

What are the Precedents that Favours TVK?

The Supreme Court's ruling in the S.R. Bommai case (1994) and subsequent judgments have consistently held that:

  1. The Governor cannot act in an arbitrary or partisan manner
  2. The single largest party or pre-poll alliance must be given the first opportunity to form the government
  3. The floor of the House is the only legitimate test of majority not the Governor's subjective assessment

TVK's legal team will lean heavily on these precedents when they approach the Supreme Court.

The Clock Is Ticking

Every hour that passes without a formal invitation inches Tamil Nadu closer to a constitutional crisis. The Governor's office has not issued any official statement since the meeting concluded.

For Thalapathy Vijay, the transition from cinema icon to Chief Minister was supposed to be his magnum opus. Instead, he finds himself in a real-life political thriller one where the script is written by constitutional lawyers, and the climax hinges on a Governor's signature.

In a decisive move toward government formation, the Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has unanimously elected its founder and chief, Thalapathy Vijay, as the leader of its legislative party. The election took place during a meeting of all winning MLAs at the party's Panaiyur headquarters in Chennai.

Actor-Politician Vijay Leaves Home to Meet Father, May Visit Loyola College for Certificate

Actor-politician Vijay, whose Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has delivered a stunning debut performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026, left his Neelankarai residence on Monday evening to meet his father, veteran film director SA Chandrasekhar, at his home in Saligramam, Chennai.

The 82-year-old filmmaker has largely stayed away from the public eye in recent years. Vijay, known to be intensely private about his family, was seen leaving his residence in a black SUV amid Z+ level security. Supporters lined the route as his convoy crossed Thiruvanmiyur a key coastal neighborhood located between Neelankarai and his father's Saligramam residence en route to the family home.

Visuals from the spot show jubilant supporters waving TVK flags and raising slogans hailing the actor-politician as "Muthalamaichar" (Chief Minister). Police personnel have been deployed along the route to manage the growing crowds.

TVK is currently leading in 108 seats in the 234-member assembly, followed by the DMK-led alliance in 75 seats and the AIADMK in 50 seats. The party is just 10 seats away from the simple majority mark of 118.

Loyola College Visit Expected

Sources close to the actor-politician indicate that after meeting his father, Vijay may proceed to Loyola College in Chennai's Nungambakkam neighborhood. The visit, if it happens, is believed to be related to obtaining his educational certificate a procedural requirement for filing nomination as Chief Minister.

Loyola College is where Vijay completed his undergraduate studies. The actor has rarely returned to the campus since his film career took off in the 1990s. A visit now on the day his political career reached its zenith would be deeply symbolic.

  8. Music composer Santhosh Narayananwrote: "History being made in our state. Congratulations Vijay sir! I had only seen Dravidian parties split votes between each other since I have been alive and this is a hugely welcome shift."

Why Security Heightened Outside Vijay's Panaiyur Residence?

Security has been significantly tightened outside TVK chief Vijay's residence in Neelankarai, Chennai, as the party inches closer to a historic victory.

Visuals from the spot show jubilant supporters dressed in white shirts and beige trousers the party's uniform blowing whistles and raising slogans hailing Vijay as "Chief Minister." At least 150 police personnel, including Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) units, have been deployed outside both his residence and the party headquarters in Panaiyur.

Party workers have gathered in large numbers, distributing sweets and celebrating as TVK emerged as the single largest party in its debut election. Amid chants of "TVK" and "Vijay," supporters are referring to the actor-politician as "Muthalamaichar" (Chief Minister) a title fans have been using on social media throughout the day.

What If TVK Doesn't Cross 118 Alone?

As of the latest Election Commission data, TVK is leading in over 105-110 constituencies, with the AIADMK alliance at approximately 43 seats and the ruling DMK-led alliance at around 61 seats. The simple majority mark in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly is 118. TVK is currently 8 to 13 seats away from majority, depending on the counting source. While the party is the single largest, a clear majority remains uncertain as counting continues in several close contests.

Scenario 1: TVK Crosses 118 (Most Likely)

If TVK secures 118 or more seats, Thalapathy Vijay will become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The swearing-in ceremony is expected within days of the Election Commission's formal declaration. Vijay would be the first actor-politician since M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) in 1977 to win a landslide debut election and form a government. MGR's AIADMK won a sweeping victory in 1977, ending DMK's reign. Vijay could now achieve the same feat nearly five decades later.

Scenario 2: TVK Falls Short of 118 (Still Possible)

If TVK wins between 105 % 117 seats falling short of a majority the party will need external support to form the government. Under this scenario:

  • Option A: Support from smaller parties or independents TVK could seek backing from smaller parties or independent candidates who have won their seats.
  • Option B: AIADMK support with conditions AIADMK may be asked to officially sever ties with the BJP before any potential coalition talks.
  • Option C: DMK or AIADMK attempt to form government If TVK falls significantly short, the Governor could invite the single largest party to prove its majority on the floor of the house. Both DMK & AIADMK, if their combined alliances cross 118, could potentially form a coalition government, though the sheer scale of anti-incumbency makes this difficult.

What the Governor can do Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi will play a crucial role if no party achieves a clean majority. The Governor can invite the single largest party to form the government & prove its majority within a stipulated time frame. If TVK is the single largest but short of 118, Governor Ravi may give Vijay the first opportunity to form a coalition government.

Scenario 3: Hung Assembly with No Clear Majority

If TVK leads with 105-110 seats, AIADMK 75, and DMK 50, the remaining seats (approximately 10-15) will be crucial. Smaller parties and independent candidates could become kingmakers. Political watchers believe TVK is best positioned to form the government given its surge and the complete decimation of DMK's urban support base.

 Updated 1: May 4, 2026 — 8:02 AM IST | The Silicon Review Live

The counting of votes for the 234 Assembly constituencies began at 8 a.m. on May 4, 2026, with postal ballots counted first, & followed by EVM counts from 8:30 a.m.  As of 11:20 a.m., Thalapathy Vijay's Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) the name his millions of cinema fans have always called him by is leading in over 109 constituencies, with the AIADMK+ alliance at 47 seats and the ruling DMK-led alliance trailing at 58 seats . The magic number to form a government is 118. TVK is just 9 seats away from majority.

The early trends show Vijay leading from both Tiruchi East & Perambur constituencies, while Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is trailing from Kolathur. TVK has surged ahead in 14 seats in Chennai alone a stunning debut for a party that didn't exist three years ago.

Why voters chose Vijay over DMK & AIADMK

Political analysts point to five factors behind the Vijay wave:

First, massive fan mobilization, Vijay's election rallies drew packed crowds across the state, with visuals of enthusiastic youth participation becoming a recurring campaign highlight, a very significant move is all his fans are young people who are mostly born after 2000, which means this election they would have already got their voting rights, which is the most significant action plan for executing this strategy. Second, TVK's "no alliance" messaging positioned the party as a clean alternative to the Dravidian duopoly. Third, a powerful anti-incumbency wave - voters are "fed up" with established parties that have "experience only in looting the state" for decades. Fourth, TVK's aggressive digital outreach bypassed traditional booth-level machinery to directly reach younger voters. Fifth, star power translated into electoral strength, Vijay's promise of a "whistle revolutionary election" resonated with those seeking change.

What Vijay promised for Tamil Nadu?

During campaign rallies, Vijay announced a comprehensive welfare agenda. For farmers, he promised full crop loan waiver for those owning less than five acres and 50% waiver for larger landholders, along with a legal guarantee for minimum support price. For MSMEs, he pledged a ₹15,000 crore State Credit Guarantee Fund, scrapping of peak-hour power tariffs for MSMEs, & direct capital subsidy of up to 35% for modernization projects.

For government employees, he said the Old Pension Scheme would be considered & temporary staff serving over five years would be regularized. For police personnel, he promised a basic salary hike from ₹18,200 to ₹25,000, implementation of the Police Welfare Act to regulate working hours, & welfare hospitals in six major cities. For weavers, he assured an annual financial support of ₹30,000 per family & free electricity for handlooms.

Vijay's political journey: From 'Kaththi' to 'Muthalamaichar'

Long before he entered electoral politics, Vijay's films carried strong social and political messaging. In Kaththi (2014), he played a double role fighting corporate greed & groundwater exploitation, including a powerful monologue against institutional apathy that became iconic. Mersal (2017) saw him as a doctor exposing private healthcare corruption; a throwaway line questioning GST sparked real-life political backlash from the BJP. Sarkar (2018) directly tackled electoral fraud, with Vijay playing a corporate raider who uncovers a vote-rigging scam and contests as an independent candidate. These films built a public persona of a "people's leader" fighting systemic rot a perception that TVK's manifesto & campaign amplified.

If Vijay becomes Chief Minister: What happens next

If TVK crosses the majority mark of 118, Vijay is expected to take oath as Chief Minister within days. However, if the party falls short, political calculations will intensify. Vijay has ruled out alliances with both DMK ("political enemy") & BJP ("ideological enemy"), & AIADMK may be asked to ditch the BJP before any potential tie-up. Alternatively, TVK could seek support from smaller Dravidian parties or independents to reach the majority mark.

Pending official results, celebrations have already begun across the state. A disturbing incident was reported in Trichy where miscreants set a TVK election office ablaze. Vijay is expected to visit the Velankanni shrine to offer prayers if victory is officially sealed.

As Thalapathy Vijay adored by millions of fans leads TVK to a stunning debut in Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026, crossing 100 seats and pushing DMK to third place, The Silicon Review examines how a 'cinematic outsider' used social justice and anti-corruption as his only weapons to rewrite the Dravidian political playbook & what a 'Muthalamaichar' chief minister would mean for the state's 8 crore residents.
